The teenager accused of murdering three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary has now been identified as 16-year-old Bend resident John J. Griffin II. Investigators say Griffin first fired at someone inside a vehicle before blasting through the school’s locked entrance with a long gun. He killed children aged five, eight and eleven along with a teacher. A seven-year-old child and another teacher were critically injured before an armed community member pursued Griffin into the building and shot him dead.
The most disturbing new detail concerns the weapon. Law-enforcement sources say Griffin’s mother legally purchased the gun around his birthday in August. That does not establish that she bought it for him, gave him permission to use it or knew he had taken it. Investigators have not explained how he accessed the weapon, identified a motive or confirmed whether he had any connection to the elementary school. Daily Mail | Associated Press
