President Trump awarded a posthumous Medal of Freedom to Welles Crowther, known as the “man in the red bandana,” during a tribute Tuesday to the firefighters and other first responders who died in the September 11th attacks. During the ceremony on the ellipse of the National Mall, Trump brought Crowther’s mother Allison and sister Paige on stage to receive the medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor. “Welles saved many, many people before losing his own life in the South Tower lobby when the building came down,” Trump said, adding giving the award “in honor of his incredible bravery and all of the other countless unknown acts of heroism that day.”
