- Turbojet: Uses a compressor to pressurize intake air to subsonic speeds for combustion in the burner, with a turbine driven by exhaust gases powering the compressor; achieves Mach 3 as in the SR-71 Blackbird.
- Ramjet: Relies on forward motion and shock waves to slow supersonic intake air to subsonic speeds for combustion without a compressor or turbine; reaches Mach 4 as demonstrated by the AGM-80 Kingfisher drone.
- Scramjet: Maintains supersonic airflow through the engine with minimal shock waves for combustion at supersonic speeds, eliminating the need for a compressor; capable of Mach 8 as in the NASA X-43 aircraft.
