2. Divine Poetic Justice in the Bottomless Pit–Revelation 20:1-3.
Summary: John the Revelator watches like an on-the-spot news correspondent as an angel casts Satan into a bottomless pit, shuts him up, and sets a seal on him for a thousand years so he can no longer deceive the nations. Barnett points out the profound poetic justice in this act: centuries ago, Satan saw to it that the mortal remains of God’s Son were shut up and sealed in a tomb. Now, God has Satan sealed in a tomb, but unlike Jesus, Satan has no power to burst forth.

Summary: What does Satan do during this thousand-year confinement? He rages in the ultimate prison of the universe with only his terrible thoughts to keep him company. Barnett describes how Satan will be forced to agonize over his entire history: remembering his glorious creation as the anointed cherub and worship leader of heaven, his arrogant attempt to seize God’s throne, his short-lived triumph in the Garden of Eden, and God’s ancient sentence that he would ultimately be crushed by the "seed of the woman". His seeming triumphs throughout human history are stripped away, leaving him a full millennium to think about his inevitable, eternal destruction.
