The big three wireless carriers just watched tens of billions in market value vanish in a single trading session. T-Mobile dropped 13.3 percent on Friday, October 9 — its worst day since going public. Verizon fell 8.75 percent, the worst single session since 2002. AT&T lost nearly 10 percent. Combined, the oligopoly shed roughly $45 billion. Continued below this clip of Elon…
ELON MUSK: “You should be able to have a Starlink, like you have an AT&T or T-Mobile or Verizon or whatever, you could have an account with Starlink that works with your Starlink antenna at home with free Wi-Fi as well as on your phone. We’re not going to put the other carriers out of business. They’re still going to be around because they own a lot of spectrum.
It will allow SpaceX to deliver high bandwidth connectivity directly from the satellites to the phones, but there are hardware changes that need to happen in the phone. You should be able to watch videos anywhere on your phone.”

The trigger was simple. SpaceX announced it would buy Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio for about $8 billion in cash. The deal, still needing FCC approval, gives Starlink Mobile the missing coverage layer that lets signals punch through walls and trees.
Elon Musk put it bluntly on X: “This is the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America.” He followed with: “To the casual observer, this won’t seem like much. To those who understand the spectrum wars, it’s an earthquake.”
SpaceX’s own post was direct: the acquisition “will pave the way for @Starlink to become a major mobile carrier in the US.” Pair the new low-band with the company’s existing 2 GHz mid-band spectrum and the FCC-approved plan for 15,000 next-generation satellites, and you have one network that works indoors, outdoors, and in the dead zones the towers never reached. Most phones already support the 800 MHz band.
The market is enormous. IBISWorld puts U.S. wireless telecommunications carrier revenue at $336.1 billion in 2026. CTIA counts more than 600 million wireless connections — roughly 1.8 per American. The big three alone hold something on the order of 400 million subscribers between Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T.

US wireless carriers pull in more than $300 billion a year. SpaceX is now positioned to take a real cut.
That is the prize. Capturing even a modest share of a high-margin oligopoly changes the math for SpaceX. The company already trades at a $2.2 trillion market cap. Adding a full-scale mobile carrier — complete with spectrum, satellites, and the ability to bundle broadband and AI — is not a side project. Analysts who previously modeled Starlink mainly as broadband now have to reprice a business that can take real revenue from the $300-plus billion wireless pool. Tens of billions in incremental enterprise value is the conservative case. Hundreds of billions becomes plausible if Starlink Mobile scales the way Starlink broadband did, or if it forces price cuts that still leave SpaceX with volume the incumbents cannot match.

The carriers spent decades and hundreds of billions building towers and buying spectrum at auction. Musk is assembling the same coverage from orbit plus one underused low-band portfolio. Existing devices do not need new hardware. The service can start as a rural and indoor gap-filler and expand from there. Grain bought the same spectrum from T-Mobile only two months earlier; SpaceX is paying a reported premium to put it to work immediately.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr called the competition “really good news for the American consumers.” The stock charts disagree with the carriers’ prior valuation assumptions. Tower companies moved the other direction on the news, betting both sides will need more sites.

Friday’s tape told the story. The oligopoly bled. SpaceX did not.
This is the moment the wireless oligopoly stopped being a closed shop. SpaceX is not asking for permission to partner. It is buying the airwaves and launching the satellites. The valuation impact is already visible in the $45 billion hole punched in the incumbents. The rest of the upside sits on SpaceX’s side of the ledger. As soon as possible, I know most of our Whatfinger crew will be dumping their cell companies and opting for SpaceX.
