California-based autonomous vessel company Seasats says one of its Lightfish sea drones captured what it believes is the first privately recorded U.S. footage of a Chinese warship operating inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The video, recorded on June 16 near Luzon Island, shows a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy Type 052D guided-missile destroyer. Seasats said the encounter highlights the growing role of low-cost autonomous systems in modern maritime operations, with its $240,000 drone able to closely monitor a warship worth an estimated billions of dollars.
