On August 1, 2026, 24-year-old Chad Williams opened fire with a long rifle outside an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls. Three people were killed and seven wounded. As customers and workers fled for their lives, an armed private citizen named Jordan Salinas and an off-duty Idaho state trooper returned fire. Their decisive action drove the shooter away from the restaurant, preventing further carnage. Williams later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police Chief Matthew Hicks publicly credited the armed citizen and the off-duty trooper with stopping the attack from getting worse.

Salinas, a healthcare worker who took training seriously after earlier mall shootings, did what millions of law-abiding Americans prepare to do every day: he met lethal force with lethal force. The video of him engaging the gunman has gone viral for a reason. It is not rare. It is American.

The Data the Media Prefers to Bury

Research from economist John Lott and the Crime Prevention Research Center consistently shows that legally armed civilians stop active shooters more often than the police do in places where ordinary people are allowed to carry. Between 2014 and 2023, armed citizens with permits stopped 51.5% of active shootings in non-gun-free zones, compared to 44.6% stopped by police. When civilians stop the attack, the number of people killed and wounded drops significantly more than when police arrive later.

Civilians also make fewer critical errors. In the cases examined, armed permit holders accidentally shot a bystander in only one instance out of 180 stops (0.56%). They never interfered with arriving police. They rarely had their guns taken. Uniformed officers, by contrast, faced higher rates of being killed or wounded themselves and occasionally shot the wrong person.

These numbers should not surprise anyone who understands human nature and response times. Police are reactive. They arrive after the first shots. An armed American already on the scene can end the killing in seconds, not minutes.

The Idaho case is only the latest. Remember Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana in July 2022. A gunman with a rifle killed three and wounded two in the food court. Twenty-two-year-old Elisjsha “Eli” Dicken, legally carrying under Indiana’s constitutional carry law, drew his Glock from 40 yards away and put eight of ten rounds into the shooter in roughly 15 seconds. The attack was over before police arrived. Survivors thanked him. Local officials called him a hero who saved countless lives.

Similar stories keep happening: the Clackamas Town Center mall shooting in Oregon where a concealed carrier confronted the gunman; multiple bar and restaurant attacks where permit holders stopped killers before body counts climbed; workplace and parking-lot incidents across the country where ordinary citizens ended the threat. Crime Prevention Research Center has documented dozens of cases the FBI’s active-shooter reports have undercounted or missed entirely.

Gun-free zones remain the preferred hunting grounds for these killers. They are not stupid. They look for soft targets where they know resistance is less likely. When an armed American is present, the calculus changes instantly.

The Real Divide

Left-wing politicians and their media allies push the narrative that more guns equal more danger and that only police should have firearms. Then they ignore or downplay the videos and the data showing armed citizens saving lives. They highlight the rare failures while burying the frequent successes. They treat law-abiding Americans as the problem instead of the solution.
