DHS Chief: Omar Case Is a ‘Large Case’ Targeting Multiple People as DNA, Court Docs, and Brother-Husband Claims Pile Up
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Fox News on Friday that the federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar is not aimed at one person. “This isn’t just a case that’s targeting one individual. This is a large case that we have presented to the DOJ, and the DOJ is leading the investigations,” he said. HSI agents “did a lot of investigation to be able to present the case to them.” Mullin added that the government is enforcing the law equally and is “not playing politics with anybody’s lives.”
The public face of that probe arrived on Oct. 12 when Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington home under a court warrant. They left with her cellphone, passport, notebooks, and computers. Sources have told reporters that DNA evidence is part of the file, intended to test the decade-old claim that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi—the British citizen Omar married on Feb. 12, 2009—is her brother. A 2016 FBI and DHS investigation already found evidence suggesting the marriage was fraudulent and that Elmi and Omar were siblings, current and former officials told the New York Times. Prosecutors did not charge the case. Marriage fraud carries a five-year statute of limitations, and the clock had run by the time agents had enough to move. A source familiar with the closed file said the Biden-appointed U.S. Attorney in Minnesota shut it down after taking office in 2021.
The current probe is wider. It looks at whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, misstated facts on immigration paperwork that produced her 2000 naturalization as a minor. Some records listed her birth year as 1981; if accurate, she would have been 18 when her father naturalized and ineligible to derive citizenship through him. Her congressional staff later asked the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library to change public listings from 1981 to 1982. Omar’s office says she has no birth certificate because of the Somali civil war. Civil denaturalization has no statute of limitations. If the government proves she should not have been here in the first place, Mullin has said for weeks, “we’ll deport you.”

A federal court filing last week referred to her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Attorney General Todd Blanche said assistant U.S. attorneys do not invent names in motions. Omar has said her real name is Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. When MS NOW’s Chris Hayes asked whether she was related to Elmi in any way, her answer was “Not to my knowledge.” She has long called the sibling claim a “disgusting lie” and the current investigation political retaliation.
Elmi, now a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, wrote in an August 2026 academic paper that he is “a gay man of the East African diaspora.” Critics say that description fits a paper arrangement for immigration status. Omar had children with Ahmed Hirsi while legally married to Elmi. A family friend told the New York Post that Hirsi described Elmi as “his wife’s brother from London” and said Omar had “embarrassed all of us by bringing him here.” Elmi left Minnesota around 2012; the divorce was finalized in 2017.
