With the odds massively against them…
Facing the threat of a sweep in the 2024 NBA Finals, the Dallas Mavericks entered Game 4 against the Boston Celtics with determination and ultimately delivered a resounding victory. Playing at home in the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the Mavericks not only avoided elimination but also recorded one of the most dominant wins in Finals history with a 122-84 triumph, marking the third-largest margin of victory ever in a Finals game.

The Mavericks’ stellar performance set a significant tone as they attempted to become the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Finals. Their 38-point victory highlighted their capability and resilience under intense pressure, raising questions among fans about the historical context of such a significant win.
Historically, the NBA Finals have seen some significant blowouts. The record for the largest margin of victory is held by a 42-point win, showcasing just how rare and impressive the Mavericks’ performance was. During this notable game, Karl Malone stood out as the only player from the Utah Jazz to score in double digits, but even his 22 points couldn’t prevent the massive loss.

Another significant blowout occurred when the Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers by 39 points in a decisive Finals game. Key performances from Celtics stars Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, and Ray Allen, who collectively scored 73 points, completely overwhelmed the Lakers. The Lakers struggled with turnovers, which contributed heavily to their loss.
In the Mavericks’ own historical context, they orchestrated a dominant display, leading by 48 points at one point during the game. Luka Doncic led the Mavericks with 29 points, bouncing back strongly after a less impactful Game 3. His performance, alongside Kyrie Irving’s 21 points and six assists, was crucial in establishing and extending the lead, leaving the Celtics struggling to keep up.
This game not only preserved the Mavericks’ hopes in the series but also placed them in the record books with one of the most commanding Finals victories. Such a win serves as a testament to their quality and potential to challenge the series deficit.

Likewise, the Washington Bullets and the Boston Celtics have had their moments in Finals history, delivering massive wins that are remembered as some of the most dominant games in the NBA.
As the Mavericks look ahead, they carry the momentum of this historic win, aiming to continue defying odds and making an unprecedented comeback in the NBA Finals. Their remarkable Game 4 victory not only extends the series but also reignites their championship aspirations in dramatic fashion.
