A suspect was shot and killed by Secret Service officers after allegedly opening fire near a checkpoint outside the White House on May 23. The shooting happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue shortly after 6 p.m., prompting journalists and staff nearby to shelter in the White House briefing room. One bystander was also struck during the exchange and taken to a hospital. President Trump was inside the White House at the time.
