Residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey residential cruise ship were stranded in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after operator Villa Vie Residences suspended operations on October 27 and ordered passengers to disembark. The company cited skyrocketing fuel expenses—which surged from an average of $1,800 per cabin monthly to between $6,000 and $8,000 in parts of Asia—as the reason it ran out of funds to continue sailing. The sudden eviction left many of the global residents, including several who sold their homes in the U.S. and Australia to live on board full-time, scrambling to remove their belongings and secure temporary housing while the company seeks additional funding.
