President Trump wants Mary Peltola off the Alaska Senate ballot and prosecuted. Governor Mike Dunleavy just ordered the state Department of Public Safety to investigate whether her campaign and Democratic operatives broke the law by recruiting a second Dan Sullivan to confuse voters and siphon votes from the Republican incumbent.
The New York Times report that dropped Wednesday lays out the operation in detail. In summer 2025, while Peltola was preparing her Senate run, a staffer received clear orders from top aides: find every Dan Sullivan in Alaska. Voter rolls were searched. The goal was simple — put another man with the exact same first and last name on the ranked-choice ballot so some Alaskans would mark the wrong one.
They found him. Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from a tiny Panhandle fishing village reachable only by plane or boat, filed to run. Veteran Democratic operative Jerid Kurtz reached out. According to the Times, Sullivan told recruiters he hated Trump and would run as a spoiler if it helped Peltola. Kurtz traveled the state under fake names, meeting potential candidates over beers at brew pubs. The effort was internally called the “ballot composition project.”
It was bigger than one decoy. Campaign lawyers, Peltola aides, and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee staff were involved. Text messages show Peltola’s then-chief of staff worrying that Kurtz was too visible. DSCC director of campaigns Andrew Piatt replied that they would “check in.” Former campaign manager Elisa Rios told the Times that Peltola was “definitely aware” of the project even if she was not running the day-to-day. They also worked to pull in other long-shot candidates, including Gerald Heikes, to further dilute Sen. Dan S. Sullivan’s support.

Peltola’s campaign and the DSCC have denied recruiting anyone. They called the story a distraction meant to sell newspapers. The Times reporting rests on interviews with a dozen people who participated in or were told about the plan, plus text messages and documents prepared for a possible lawsuit.
Alaska’s Division of Elections had already pulled “Decoy Dan” off the primary ballot in June, finding a preponderance of the evidence that his name and party affiliation were chosen to confuse voters. The Alaska Supreme Court put him back on, ruling that state law does not require candidates to run in good faith. On the general-election ballot he appears as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. with no party listed. Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is identified as the Republican incumbent.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, he said Peltola should resign from the race and be prosecuted criminally, along with any allies who helped recruit the second Sullivan. He has already directed the Justice Department to sue to block certification of a Peltola win if the decoy votes would have flipped the result under ranked-choice rules. Sen. Lisa Murkowski called the reporting a pattern of lies and cover-ups. Sen. Dan Sullivan told Alaskans to ask Peltola one question: “Did you cheat?”
Dunleavy’s probe is the latest development. He said the Times reporting reveals an organized effort to manipulate Alaska’s elections by deliberately confusing voters and misdirecting their ballots. Alaskans have a right to vote for the candidate they actually mean to support, he wrote. Anyone who broke the law should be held accountable.
The race is one of the few that could decide Senate control. Early voting is already underway. Ranked-choice means a few thousand confused ballots can change the outcome. Democrats spent months hunting a man with the right name, then denied it. The paper trail and the texts say otherwise.
