    How Much “Christianity” Can James Talarico Reject Before Texas Calls BS?

    James Talarico — who said he “hates Christianity” and “God is non-binary” — now says “God is not a Christian.” “God is not a Christian…that’s why Jesus is against anything that gets in the way of that love between neighbors, including religion.”

    Texas Democrats think they’ve found their golden boy: a young, polished Presbyterian seminarian who talks about Jesus a lot while systematically gutting every inconvenient part of the actual faith. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate against Ken Paxton, is the left’s latest experiment in wrapping progressive orthodoxy in a thin Christian costume and hoping Texas voters don’t notice the seams.

    They noticed.

    Talarico has spent years saying the quiet parts out loud. In a 2021 podcast with a self-described “TransQueer, Latinx” activist theologian, he declared, “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity.” He later clarified he keeps getting “drawn back” because Jesus was supposedly the most radical revolutionary around—more radical than any political philosophy or economic theory. Convenient.

    On the Texas House floor in 2021, while fighting a bill to keep biological males out of girls’ sports, Talarico announced that “God is both masculine and feminine, and everything in between. God is nonbinary.” Trans children, he insisted, are “made in God’s own image.” No caveats. No “this is metaphorical.” Just pure progressive gender theory baptized on the House floor.

    Then came the 2023 sermon at his home church, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian in Austin, titled “God Is Not a Christian.” He told the congregation that God is not Presbyterian, not Christian, not even a noun. “God is a verb… God is being itself. God is love,” and Jesus is against anything that gets in the way of that love—including religion itself. He warned of a “cancer on our religion,” accused conservatives of turning the “humble rabbi” into a “gun-toting, gay-bashing, science-denying, money-loving, fear-mongering fascist,” and claimed Christian nationalism is a hate-based movement that co-opted the Son of God. A truly Christian nation, according to Talarico, would forgive student debt and guarantee healthcare to everyone. And if America were truly Christian, it would never call itself a Christian nation because the table must stay open to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, atheists, and everyone else.

    He has said atheists and people of other faiths can be more “Christ-like” than some of the Christians he serves with in the Texas Legislature. He has argued the Bible is silent on abortion and that the story of the angel Gabriel asking Mary for consent somehow justifies unrestricted abortion access. He has floated Gnostic “gospel” material to call Jesus a radical feminist. And he has repeatedly framed traditional biblical Christianity as the problem while elevating a progressive, pluralistic, social-justice version that looks suspiciously like the Democratic Party platform with a cross sticker on it.

    This is not “biblical Christianity,” no matter how many times the campaign insists otherwise. This is mainline Protestant progressive theology that has spent decades dissolving doctrine into therapy and politics. The same theological project that hollowed out the mainline denominations is now being marketed as the fresh face of Texas Democrats.

    The Democratic Strategy in Deep-Red Texas

    So why are national Democrats and the progressive donor class so excited about a guy who says he hates Christianity while running as a Christian in Texas?

    Because they think the costume might work. Talarico is young, articulate, seminary-trained, and fluent in the language of faith. He raises serious money, generates massive social media engagement, and won the Democratic primary handily. The theory is that Paxton’s legal and personal baggage creates an opening, that suburban and younger voters can be peeled off by a “Christian” who talks about loving neighbors and flipping tables, and that enough Texans are tired of “Christian nationalism” (the left’s all-purpose smear for people who still believe the Bible means what it says) to make a race of it.

    It is the classic progressive play: redefine the faith until it no longer conflicts with the ideology, then accuse anyone who notices of being a theocrat. In a state where evangelicals and traditional Catholics still form a decisive bloc, this is either breathtaking confidence or pure delusion. Texas has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since the 1980s for a reason. Voters here can smell a sales pitch that treats Jesus as a useful prop for student-debt cancellation and gender ideology.

    Talarico’s defenders insist the “hates Christianity” line was just frustration with the institutional church, that “God is nonbinary” was poetic license about God’s transcendence, and that the “God is not a Christian” sermon was merely anti-nationalism. The problem is the pattern. When every controversial statement points in the same progressive direction—affirming transgender ideology, relativizing salvation, treating other religions as equally valid paths, and recasting the Gospel as primarily economic redistribution—it stops looking like nuance and starts looking like a different religion wearing a stolen jersey.

    Texas is not going to be talked into this. The Democrats can pour money into the race, the media can soft-focus the seminarian angle, and the campaign can keep insisting this is just “biblical Christianity.” But the record is public. A man who has publicly preferred his own progressive reading of Jesus over the historic faith, who has called God nonbinary and declared God not a Christian, is asking Texas voters to trust him with the Senate. That is a hard sell in a state that still largely believes the actual Gospel.

    The left keeps trying to invent a Christianity that no longer judges their politics. Talarico is simply the latest, and most ambitious, attempt in Texas. Voters get the final say in November. And Texas has a long memory for people who treat the faith like a costume.
