CEOs Who Stood Firm Against Woke Media Pressure
Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy sat down with NBC’s Craig Melvin on the Today show last week. Melvin pressed him hard about the company’s past views on same-sex marriage and its old donations to Christian groups. Cathy’s father, Dan Cathy, had spoken up for traditional marriage back in 2012, and that set off boycotts. Melvin wanted a clear statement on “equal rights.” Cathy kept giving the same answer: the company is focused on hospitality, great food, and great service. Anyone who walks in the door is welcome. He did not apologize. He did not say the company had changed its core values. He simply refused to play the interview the way the host wanted.
That clip (above with an X backup below) spread fast. Plenty of people on the left called it a non-answer or evasion. On the other side, it looked like a CEO who decided he was done explaining his family’s faith and business choices to network television. The Whatfinger post that ran the clip framed it plainly: the CEO told NBC to go F themselves. The message landed because customers already knew the score. Chick-fil-A stays closed on Sundays so staff can go to church and rest. It is still privately held by the Cathy family. Sales keep climbing. The third-largest restaurant chain in the country did not need NBC’s approval to stay open.
WATCH: NBC’s ‘Today’ spent over 90 seconds of its six-minute-plus profile of third-generation Chick-fil-A Andrew Cathy harassing him over his family’s Christian roots supporting traditional marriage, which led to the bans, protesters, and threats to the company in 2012 https://t.co/3xRxoAlT8x

Cathy is not the first executive who decided the woke media lecture was optional. In 2020, when corporate America was racing to issue statements after George Floyd’s death, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong told his own employees that political activism at work was finished. He posted that the company would focus on its crypto mission and would not take stands on broader social issues that had nothing to do with the business. Employees who disagreed could take a severance package and leave. Armstrong later said he watched old speeches by Ronald Reagan to steady himself before he sent the note. The company kept growing. The ones who wanted the workplace turned into a protest site had other options.
Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue took a different kind of heat in 2020. He stood next to President Trump at a White House event and said the country was “truly blessed” to have a builder like him in the Oval Office. Activists, including some Democratic members of Congress, called for a boycott. Unanue went on Fox and doubled down. He said the company stood with the president and with the country. Sales did not collapse the way the boycott organizers hoped. The pushback came from the same media and activist circles that treat any praise for Trump as a scandal. Unanue treated it as free speech and moved on.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp has been more blunt in public. On a recent earnings call he described his company as the first to be “completely anti-woke.” He said Palantir backs meritocracy, free speech, and work with agencies such as ICE. He also said the company supports Israel. Karp has argued that the progressive push on campuses and inside companies is a risk to American institutions. He does not soften the language when interviewers or critics push back. Investors have kept buying the stock.
These cases share a pattern. The media or activist groups frame the question so that the only acceptable answer is full agreement with their view. The CEOs who push back either change the subject back to the product, state the company’s actual priorities, or simply refuse to join the campaign. Customers notice. Chick-fil-A lines stayed long after 2012. Coinbase kept adding users. Companies that spent years chasing every social-media demand have started dialing those programs back once the legal and customer pushback grew.
SHOCKING Election Data just changed everything we know about the midterms…
The difference is simple. Most customers buy chicken sandwiches, crypto access, or data software because the product works and the price is fair. They do not need the CEO’s political résumé before they open the app or pull into the drive-thru. When executives remember that, the lecture from the network host or the online campaign loses its power. Cathy’s interview showed the same choice in real time: answer the way the host expected, or keep talking about the sandwich and the service. He picked the second one. A growing number of other bosses are doing the same.
