After six to twelve inches of rain fell across the Capital Region, streets flooded so deeply that cars were useless. Firefighters switched to inflatable boats to pull stranded residents out of waist-deep water. Video shows crews paddling through neighborhoods that looked more like rivers than roads.
The National Weather Service called it an extreme event. Several vehicles were left partially submerged. Emergency teams worked through the worst of it to reach people who could not get out on their own.
These kinds of sudden, intense storms have become a recurring story across different parts of the country. Local first responders once again did the hard work of getting people to safety when the water rose faster than expected.
