Melania Trump secured a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky to allow the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Oleshky, in the Kherson region, is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.
About five miles behind the front lines, Ukrainian authorities claim residents of the city are being held hostage there with Russian forces using them as human shields.

Melania Trump Brokers Localized Ceasefire in Ukraine’s Oleshky for Aid and Civilian Evacuations
First Lady Melania Trump secured a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine limited to the city of Oleshky, the White House announced Friday. The pause lets humanitarian aid reach residents and sets up a safe route for civilians who want to leave.
The localized ceasefire begins October 29. Both sides agreed to stop military action in Oleshky so non-military civilian teams can go house to house, check what people need, and arrange transport for anyone who wants out. Residents can choose to head toward Ukraine or Russia. Melania said she expects some will pick each side. An American media organization will travel with the teams to document the process and help make sure families’ choices are respected.
Oleshky sits in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson. Russian forces have held it since February 2022. Before the war roughly 24,000 people lived there. Today an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 remain, mostly elderly residents who could not leave, plus about 50 children. The White House described the place as a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. People face limited electricity, mined roads, regular attacks, and shortages of medicine, food, and clean water. After the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed, about 90 percent of the city flooded.
Trump floats a potential role for First Lady Melania Trump in future peace talks following her initiative involving children in the Russia-Ukraine war.
“That’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard,” Trump said when asked if the first lady could take part in trilateral peace talks.
“What she wants to do is save children, and that’s her focus,” Trump added, saying Melania’s team contacted both sides, which “wanted to cooperate with her,” and that “both sides wanted to do it.”

Melania Trump said the situation made clear that without her intervention, aid could not get in and the elderly could not get out. She and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to set the terms, timing, and procedures. She called her role Exclusive Intermediary. The issue came to her attention during a private talk at her Fostering the Future Together event in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. She then used the communication channel built through earlier work reuniting children separated by the war. That earlier effort has brought 34 children back to their families across six rounds.
The Kremlin confirmed the arrangement. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed Melania Trump’s contribution to coordinating the humanitarian operation and said those who want to leave will be able to do so. Ukrainian officials also acknowledged the deal for evacuations and aid. President Donald Trump credited the outcome to his wife’s initiative when reporters asked.
Melania Trump has just carried a mission to reunite children into the heart of an active war zone… and negotiated something armies have struggled to achieve…
The White House announced a localized humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, Ukraine, opening a path for civilian evacuations, humanitarian aid and demining beginning October 29…
Nearly 2,000 people remain in a city once home to 24,000, including children trapped in the devastation of war… let’s follow how she got here…
In August 2025, Melania delivered a personal letter to Putin concerning children separated from their families…
That opened direct communication, leading to six reunification operations involving 34 children and working relationships with both governments…
Each reunion required trust, verification and cooperation… relationships now being extended into ceasefire negotiations…
The White House identifies her as the “Exclusive Intermediary,” an extraordinary development for a First Lady whose Fostering the Future mission has grown into an international coalition focused on protecting children and preserving their futures…
There’s a remarkable balance emerging between President Trump’s geopolitical leverage and Melania’s quieter diplomacy…
While nations negotiate borders, security and power, she reaches into the human suffering beneath it all… mothers searching for children, families torn apart, andvinnocent people desperate to return home…
A humanitarian relationship built around returning children has opened a potential pathway toward broader cooperation between two nations at war…
One year after publicly describing her communication with Putin, Melania’s quiet diplomacy has reached a new threshold…
There’s something deeply powerful about a woman approaching the brutality of war through the innocence of a child… and discovering that compassion can open doors even hardened adversaries have kept closed…
Sometimes peace begins with a mother simply wanting her child home…

Ukrainian authorities have said residents in the area were under a tight blockade and that Russian forces treated them as human shields. Both sides have traded accusations over who blocked supplies. The White House statement focused on the practical steps now agreed for this city: temporary halt to fighting, door-to-door assessments, and a designated safe passageway.
This is a narrow pause in one city, not a broader end to the fighting. It builds on Melania Trump’s ongoing work getting Ukrainian children back to their families and shows she can open a channel both sides will use for concrete civilian relief. The teams still have to handle demining and logistics on the ground before the full evacuation window opens.
