Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster Flies in Insane Demo: Specs, Thrusters, and the 2028 Reality
Elon Musk just showed a Tesla Roadster that drives upside down and jumps over a semi-truck. At SpaceX’s test site in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, the car put on a live demonstration that looked more like a stunt show than a normal car launch. Damn this look sweet. Wish I could afford one.
The white supercar climbed a tall curved ramp until it hung nearly upside down, held in place by a powerful fan system underneath. It then flipped off the ramp, rolled in the air with thrusters firing, and landed in a cloud of vapor. In another run it leaped over a lineup of other Teslas—including a tall Semi—while spinning mid-air. Musk posted video of the stunts and wrote, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.”

The upside-down part comes from fans that pull air out from under the car and create strong suction. Tesla engineers say the system can pull up to 2 Gs—enough to keep the Roadster stuck to a surface even when it is stopped. Normal tires only give about 1.26 Gs of grip. The same fans help the car corner harder on a track.
The flying moves come from cold-gas thrusters built with SpaceX. Two tanks hold about 250 kilograms of compressed air (roughly 600 liters total). Ten nozzles shoot that air out at high speed to lift the car, spin it, or push it forward. The car can refill its own tanks with an onboard compressor, so no special fuel is needed. Four main thrusters sit in the rear; smaller ones control attitude during flips and landings. The system produces more than 80 kilonewtons of thrust.
On the launch pad the prototype accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 0.81 seconds with the rear thrusters firing. That works out to about 3.4 Gs average. Tesla says production versions will be quicker. Top speed is listed at over 230 mph right now. Musk has said he wants it closer to half the speed of sound, around 380 mph. Range is claimed at more than 300 miles. Power comes from an electric system delivering about 1 megawatt in a lightweight body made with carbon fiber, magnesium, and titanium.

Three versions are planned. The Performance model is the road car: two seats, the fan system, and an active rear wing, with 0-60 claimed under 1.6 seconds. A $50,000 deposit holds a spot. The Thrust version adds rear thrusters for sub-one-second acceleration and requires a $250,000 deposit. The Rocket is the full flyer—one seat, thrusters placed around the body for jumps, rolls, and short flights. It is invite-only and not approved for public roads. Production is scheduled to start in 2028.
The Roadster was first shown in 2017 with talk of 2020 delivery. Delays followed while Tesla worked on other projects. Musk has talked about thrusters for years. At the event he called the car the result of “a collaboration between the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company.” He also noted it is not necessarily legal in every place and is built more for fun than everyday safety.

Tesla stock rose after the reveal. Whether the flying version ever reaches regular buyers is still an open question. The prototype already proved the stunts work. For people who waited nearly a decade, the video answers one old complaint: the future finally showed up with flying cars.
