In the upside-down world of Democrat-controlled states, the real crime isn’t illegal immigration or the chaos it brings. It’s a local sheriff daring to help federal officers enforce the law.
Virginia’s far-left Attorney General Jay Jones has opened a civil-rights investigation into Greene County Sheriff Steven Smith and his deputies after they worked with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on a June 23 operation in Ruckersville. The joint effort produced 49 detentions. Deputies conducted traffic stops for actual violations — speeding, crossing the center line, swerving, running a red light — while ICE personnel rode along. The operation took place eight days before a new Virginia law restricting local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement took effect on July 1.

Jones’s office sent a letter on August 5 notifying Smith that the Office of the Attorney General had opened an inquiry into “the manner in which the Greene County Sheriff’s Office is conducting traffic stops.” The AG claims the stops “may be conducting traffic stops in violation of state law and the Constitution.” No criminal charges have been filed yet, but the civil-rights probe can lead to enforcement action. Jones wants policies, training records going back a decade, and any communications or agreements with federal agencies.
Sheriff Smith’s response has been straightforward: “Sheriffs are elected officials. We don’t answer to the governor. We answer to the citizens of the counties we live in.” He added that his deputies were “just doing their job” and that they will continue to uphold the law and protect citizens. Greene County operates under a 287(g) agreement that allows trained local officers to assist ICE during routine duties. Smith has made clear he intends to keep doing exactly that.
The ACLU of Virginia predictably piled on, accusing officers of coordinating with ICE to “terrorize and racially profile” communities. This is the same playbook used every time local law enforcement treats federal immigration statutes as actual law instead of optional suggestions.
This is not an isolated Virginia story. It is the logical endpoint of the Democrat strategy that treats cooperation with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement as the real threat to “civil rights.” Democratic attorneys general and prosecutors have spent years building sanctuary policies, limiting 287(g) agreements, and signaling that local officers who help ICE will face scrutiny. New York Attorney General Letitia James previously launched a misconduct probe into the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office over its cooperation with federal immigration authorities under the Trump administration. Blue-state lawmakers have passed restrictions on local assistance, then watched as their own AGs and progressive prosecutors circle the wagons against any sheriff who refuses to play along.

Meanwhile, the same political class that screams about “weaponization” when Republicans enforce immigration law has no problem investigating the people who actually do the enforcing. Virginia Democrats, under Governor Abigail Spanberger, pushed laws that restrict cooperation agreements and even attempt to regulate how federal agents operate — including face-covering rules that the Department of Justice has sued to block, naming Jones himself as a defendant. The federal government has made clear that states do not get to dictate federal law enforcement.
The pattern is consistent: when local officials follow federal immigration law or work with the Trump administration, Democrat state officials treat them as the problem. When sanctuary policies let criminal illegal aliens walk free, the same officials call it “protecting communities.” Sheriff Smith and officers like him are simply doing what their oaths require. In the eyes of the far-left, that is now grounds for an investigation.
Federal law is not optional. Immigration enforcement is a core federal responsibility. Elected sheriffs who help keep their communities safe by partnering with ICE are not the villains. The politicians who try to punish them for it are.
Americans watching this understand the stakes. If Democrats can open civil-rights probes against sheriffs for traffic stops that net illegal aliens, no local officer is safe from political retaliation for enforcing the law. That is the message Jay Jones just sent. The Democrats have instituted a reign of terror against all who oppose their Marxist control over any Blue States. It’s worse than you think, as they CANNOT be defeated without Federal action or a real Civil War.
