If you saw our recent feature from Dr. Eric Berg on why blood pressure stays stubbornly high even when you’re taking the meds, for some people, you already know part of the story. (See video here – click for vid here at Whatfinger) Thiazide diuretics (prescribed to tens of millions) lower sodium but simultaneously drain magnesium and potassium — two minerals your arteries need to stay relaxed. Without enough magnesium, calcium builds up in vessel walls, and potassium can’t do its job properly. Vitamin D activation also suffers when magnesium is low. The result? You end up on more meds (like calcium channel blockers) while the real deficiencies go unaddressed. A dream for Big Pharma doctors. You get sicker as they get wealthier.
That video nailed a huge piece of the puzzle. But after years of experimenting with my own health (and helping curate real talk and research on health and longevity here at Whatfinger), I’ve found there’s more to the picture — especially once you hit your 40s, 50s, and beyond. One molecule in particular becomes the limiting factor for most people, and fixing it has been a complete game-changer in my personal protocol.
Here’s the full, practical playbook of what actually moves the needle — backed by research and real-world results. You can test this immediately if you have a blood pressure cuff (The NO product – works that fast!)
1. Fix the Mineral Deficiencies First (Dr. Berg Was Right)
Magnesium acts as your body’s natural calcium channel blocker and beta-blocker. Potassium works synergistically to keep vessels relaxed and counter sodium. When these are low, blood pressure resists treatment.
What to do:
- Get proper testing (RBC magnesium is far better than standard serum tests).
- Prioritize food sources daily: spinach and leafy greens, avocado, pumpkin seeds, almonds, dark chocolate (85%+)
- Supplement smartly: 300–420 mg elemental magnesium per day (glycinate, malate, or threonate forms are well-tolerated and help sleep too). Split doses. Potassium from food first; supplement only under medical guidance if you’re on certain BP meds.
Many people see meaningful drops just from correcting these, long term — sometimes enough to reduce medication needs (always with your doctor’s supervision).
2. Restore Nitric Oxide — The Master Blood Pressure Regulator Most People Lose with Age
Nitric oxide (NO) is the “miracle molecule” your endothelium produces to dilate arteries, lower pressure, deliver oxygen, and keep blood flowing smoothly. Production drops dramatically with age, oxidative stress, poor diet, and especially loss of the oral bacteria that convert dietary nitrates into NO (mouthwash, antibiotics, and proton pump inhibitors accelerate this).
This is why beetroot and leafy greens help some people but not others — the conversion pathway is often broken.
The solution that bypasses the broken pathway: direct nitric oxide delivery.
My Personal #1 Find: N1O1 Nitric Oxide Releasing Lozenges by Dr. Nathan S. Bryan
After watching multiple deep-dive podcasts and interviews with Dr. Nathan S. Bryan (PhD researcher who has spent nearly two decades as one of the world’s leading authorities on nitric oxide biochemistry, with patents and groundbreaking work on how NO actually works in the body), I decided to test his technology myself.

The N1O1 Nitric Oxide Lozenges use a patented formula that generates nitric oxide directly in your mouth as the lozenge dissolves. It doesn’t rely on your oral microbiome or gut conversion. Users (and clinical data) report vasodilation often within 20 minutes, improved circulation, better oxygenation, and measurable blood pressure support.
In my own experiments, this has been 100% reliable. Consistent improvements in readings and how I feel in terms of circulation and energy. It’s become a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. No hype — just repeatable results I can track at home. In fact it works so fast that you see results in as little as 15 minutes. My workouts too are incredible thanks to this product. Take it just 20-30 minutes before you do your workout and you will see immediately how this impacts you. You will walk further, work out harder, and enjoy it more.
How it’s different: Most “nitric oxide” supplements are just L-arginine or beet powder. These lozenges are engineered for direct, predictable NO release. Clinical work on oral nitric oxide-generating lozenges has shown acute blood pressure reductions and improved vascular compliance/endothelial function.
Practical use: Follow the label (often 1 lozenge per ~100 lbs body weight, dissolved slowly in the mouth). Many take 1–2 daily. Excellent before workouts or as steady daily support. Available on Amazon (search the exact link or “N1O1 Nitric Oxide Lozenges”). The directions tell you to take one every 12 hours – as this keeps your blood vessels nice and open. I was worried (in the past) of having heart issues and this helped me get over it and get a heart now of a 35 year old, instead of of 70 year old. I had blockages that were over 40% and in dangerous hearth attack possibilities. No longer, this and other supplements I write about have made me much healthier. My blochages are now almost non-existent. One test had me at 5%, but that was an outlier a year ago. By the way yes, I tested extensively, and am pushing 60 at the moment. But at 50 I was not in good health at all. I was overweight, had sleep issues, had chest pains, and it gets worse. My son one day said to me that I was dying. That killed me to hear him say it, and then honestly look at myself and my health. Whatfinger News has helped me incredibly as the more I had to research for our readers, the healthier I became.
Critical note: This is a dietary supplement, not a prescription drug. It can enhance the effects of BP medications, so monitor closely and work with your physician. Results vary by individual.

3. Dietary Nitrate Power-Ups (Food First)
Even with the lozenge, dietary nitrates from real food remain excellent:
- Fresh beetroot or high-quality beetroot juice/powder (naturally high in nitrates).
These support the body’s own NO pathways when your conversion system is working better (thanks to minerals and the direct lozenge support).
4. Movement That Actually Lowers Pressure
- Aerobic base: 150+ minutes per week of brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. Typical reduction: 5–8+ mmHg systolic.
- Strength training: 2–3 sessions weekly. Improves insulin sensitivity and vascular health.
- Daily steps and zone 2 work compound powerfully.
Consistency beats perfection. Even short daily walks after meals help.
5. Stress, Sleep & Recovery (The Hidden Multipliers)
Chronic stress and poor sleep keep the sympathetic nervous system revved and vessels constricted. Magnesium helps both. Add:
- Daily breathing or short meditation.
- 6.5 or 7 hours of quality sleep daily (screen curfew, cool/dark room).
- Treat sleep apnea if present — it’s a massive, underdiagnosed BP driver.
6. Other Evidence-Supported Supports
- High-dose omega-3s (EPA/DHA) for inflammation and modest BP effects. Eat sardines, they do wonders for you.
- Optimize vitamin D (with K2 and magnesium). D with K2 is all important as the K2 takes calcium out of your blood and puts it into your bones, where it should go. I use this product even now after extensive testing –Dr. Berg Maximum Strength 7-in-1 Vitamin D3 K2 5000 IU
- CoQ10 if you’re on statins.
- Cut liquid calories, excess sugar, and ultra-processed seed oils — insulin resistance fuels hypertension for many.
Putting It Together — Realistic Expectations
Most people get the best results by stacking:
- Mineral optimization (Mg + K status) The Magnesium I have used and tested and found to be about the best out there – Dr. Berg Magnesium Glycinate 90ct – 4-in-1 Chelated for Muscle, Nerve, Sleep & Stress Support
- Nitric oxide support (dietary + direct like N1O1)
- Movement + sleep/stress management
- Whole-food diet that’s naturally high in potassium and magnesium
Many see double-digit improvements. Some become candidates to work with their doctor on lowering medication doses. Track with a good home monitor (upper arm preferred, same conditions daily).
Important disclaimers: This is educational information and shares my personal experimentation and research curation. It is not medical advice. Never stop or adjust blood pressure medications without your physician’s direct oversight. Supplements can interact with drugs and conditions. Get personalized lab work and professional guidance, especially if you have kidney issues, are on multiple meds, or have resistant hypertension. Individual results vary.
Bottom Line
Dr. Berg correctly highlighted the mineral depletion trap. But for most of us over 40, restoring nitric oxide signaling is equally foundational — and that’s where Dr. Bryan’s work and the N1O1 lozenges have delivered for me personally in a way few other interventions have.
If you’re tired of chasing numbers with more pills while the root causes stay ignored, start with the minerals, add real-food nitrates, move daily, and consider direct nitric oxide support as a powerful, science-aligned tool.
Have you tried addressing magnesium/potassium or nitric oxide specifically? What’s worked (or not) for you?
Stay informed, stay proactive, and take care of that cardiovascular system. It’s the foundation for everything else. As you all know I am on a quest to make as many people as healthy as possible, so they live as long as humanly possible. I’m there folks. I’m at that level finally, after spending a fortune, testing supplements personally, trying every diet and exercise in the book.
Now I want to help you. Never stop learning and remember, even this article, written in June of 2026, will be total BULLSHIT in just years. That is how fast tech and knowledge is growing. This info and the supplement I tell of above, is awesome – but that is now. In a few years, you never know where we will be. But as new tech and knowledge comes online, I assure you I will test it and tell you all about it so you can profit from my experiments, and the accumulated, aggregated knowledge that I consume daily. Together we will all possibly be around many, many decades from now. Who knows…. possibly much longer as I dove into the latest tech and it would amaze you.
I personally believe that there are people alive now (like me and you) who have an awesome chance at being young and healthy 1000 years from now – yes 1K years from now, and this is just what is under development now. It is called reset tech and it is 100% real. I’d explain it all here but it would take too long. Science fiction is fast becoming science fact. I am not joking folks. I wrote about the tech in detail in the first novel of my Medieval Future Series. A fun way to learn about it all… see Time’s Orphans
