Welcome to today’s prophecy update. This is John Barnett. When we pull our lives over, put them in park, and look through the lens of Scripture, we see that the stage for the end of days is not just being set—it is being locked into place with dizzying speed.
Today, we are looking at a "What’s Next" Prophetic Update, comparing the jaw-dropping, high-tech developments in modern autonomous warfare to the chilling, 2,800-year-old descriptions of Joel’s Locust Army during the Tribulation and the Day of the Lord.
1. The Metaphor of the Iron Steeds
The Prophecy: In Joel 2:4-5, the prophet warns: “Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; and like swift steeds, so they run. With a noise like chariots over mountaintops they leap…”.
The Ancient Context: Writing in the 8th century BC, Joel lacked the modern vocabulary to describe computerized, flying metal war machines. He had to rely on the comparative language of his era—describing their appearance "like" horses, their flight "like" swift steeds, and their roar "like" chariots.
The Modern Alignment: As published in The New York Times, the U.S. Air Force is actively fine-tuning autonomous combat aircraft that engage in aerial warfare with barely any human intervention. Built by tech start-ups like Anduril and General Atomics, mass-produce these autonomous wingmen. What Joel saw over the mountaintops of Israel perfectly prefigures these high-speed, unmanned aerial combat machines.
2. Robotic Precision and Non-Human Synchronization
The Prophecy: Joel 2:7-8 records: “…every one marches in formation, and they do not break ranks. They do not push one another; every one marches in his own column…”.
The Ancient Context: Natural locusts are chaotic, but Joel observed a highly disciplined, synchronized force where individual units never bump into or crowd one another. Historically, such flawless, mathematical spatial awareness was completely impossible for human infantries.
The Modern Alignment: Technologists are actively developing software that allows fleets of drones to navigate, coordinate targets, and exchange real-time data through mesh networks, forming self-organizing robotic kamikaze swarms. This synchronization is moving to the ground as well; developers are testing wheeled, machine-gun-carrying ground robots with the ultimate goal of enabling them to swarm so that a single remote operator can command a “whole herd of mesh-connected killer robots” moving in perfect, non-colliding alignment.
3. Total Invulnerability to Human Weaponry
The Prophecy: Joel 2:8 describes an army that is completely unstoppable by human hands: “…Though they lunge between the weapons, they are not cut down”.
The Ancient Context: Every army in human history has had a physical vulnerability, but Joel saw an invading force that was completely impervious to physical ammunition and defensive counter-measures.
The Modern Alignment: TIME reports on the rise of the Phantom MK-1, the world’s first humanoid robot developed specifically for military applications. This jet-black steel soldier is engineered to wield any weapon a human can. Unlike human soldiers, these robots do not experience fear or fatigue, can operate continuously, and are completely immune to radiation, chemicals, or biological agents.
The Sovereign Day of the Lord: Our Blessed Hope
We are truly living in a time where global powers are "racing in the dark" to automate the battlefield. As we see these blinking warning signs flash all around us, we must not let our hearts be troubled.
They are a divine wake-up call to show a rebellious world that there is only one true place of safety: a heart-transplant from the Savior.
When you know how the story ends—that Jesus Christ is on the throne and in complete control—you can live with absolute boldness. Let’s throw off spiritual complacency today, keep our eyes fixed on eternity, and live on mission to share the hope of Christ with a shaken world.
