The only investments that will survive for eternity are the lives we lead to Jesus Christ and the character we allow Him to build within us.
What an absolute joy to welcome you back to the classroom of God’s Word! Today, we are opening up our Bibles to Revelation chapter 3 as we study today. In this challenging and deeply personal session, we are going to look at what God can do with a fully consecrated life, how He protects His church from global wrath, and how we can take our spiritual temperature to ensure we are living a vital, grace-energized life today.
Here is a look at the spiritual vital signs we will examine in this class:
1. THE BLUE-AND-RED BIBLE & THE CANNIBAL’S BANANA LEAF
Scripture References: General biographical life of C.T. Studd.
Summary: We begin by examining the incredible life of C.T. Studd, a billionaire’s heir who gave up a tilled, 100-square-mile agricultural estate and world-class athletic records to spend his final 21 years in a remote African hut. Living in extreme conditions, Studd ministered to naked, demon-possessed pygmy cannibals, ultimately leading 5,000 of them to Jesus Christ. At his funeral, they honored him by singing the songs he taught them while dressed in modest, banana-leaf aprons. Studd lived out his famous motto: "Only one life will soon be passed and only what’s done for Christ will last". His secret was a deep love for God’s Word; he read his Bible with two pens—marking what God wanted in blue, and adding a red checkmark once he fully surrendered to it.
2. THE EARTHQUAKE-PROOF PILLAR & THE THREE-LINE ENVELOPE
Scripture References: Revelation 3:10-12
Summary: Jesus promises the faithful church of Philadelphia that because they kept His command to persevere, He will keep them from the future hour of global trial—the Tribulation. Philadelphia sat in an unstable, California-like earthquake region where brick-and-mortar pagan temples were constantly knocked down by tremors. In contrast, Jesus promises to make every overcomer a permanent, unshakeable "pillar" in the temple of God that will never be cast down. To illustrate this eternal security, we will explore the three-line envelope analogy: just as three simple lines of address can get a letter anywhere on earth, God writes three secure names on us—the name of God, the name of the New Jerusalem, and His own new name—proving we are permanently addressed for heaven.
3. THE BOLD LION & THE LA DINER ENCOUNTER
Scripture References: Proverbs 28:1; John 7:37-39
Summary: A normal, spiritually healthy Christian life is designed to be abundant, confident, joyful, guilt-free, and overflowing with hope. Scripture declares that while the wicked run when nobody is chasing them, the righteous are as bold as a lion. When we are filled with the Spirit, rivers of living water flow directly out of our souls. To illustrate this, John shares a humorous story of sitting with his wife Bonnie in a Los Angeles diner. Their countenances were so overflowing with unshakeable joy and hope that a drug user at the counter was completely baffled, convinced they must be high on some incredible substance.
4. THE DAILY SHAVE & THE TEMPLE SLAVE’S OFFERING
Scripture References: Romans 12:1-2; John 17:17; Titus 2:11-12
Summary: Sanctification is not a one-time event but a continuous, daily surrender. John, at 70 years old, notes that denying ungodliness is like a man shaving—it is a continuous growth that must be addressed every single day. Drawing from the Roman concept of leitourgos ("lurghetto"), the temple slaves who brought sacrificial gifts to pagan gods, Paul commands us to present our bodies daily as holy, living sacrifices. We must actively resist being squashed into the world’s mold.
5. THE SEAMLESS GROUP & THE KING’S FAITHFULNESS
General context of David’s Psalms–We conclude by realizing that Jesus is not looking for flawless perfection, but for sincere, persevering faithfulness. King David fell and broke all ten of God’s commandments, yet he followed the Lord from his childhood and remained faithful to his Savior. To maintain this vital spiritual health, we cannot run our race in isolation. We must build a small group of trusted accountability partners.
