Families of 30 fallen first-responders received mortgage-free homes in honor of America’s 250th birthday. Yesenia Gonzalez was one of the recipients. She’s the wife of Sergeant Elio Diaz, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Their daughter, Nay Luna, described her father as a selfless man who joined the police force to truly serve and protect. “If he arrested someone, he’d sit there and offer them a cup of coffee and be like, ‘talk to me,’” Luna said. “He gave them an ear, a shoulder to lean on, regardless of who they were, what they’ve done, what they’ve committed. That was his goal, to change someone’s life.”
