America’s Democratic Socialists Keep Selling the Nordic Model as Socialism. It’s a Lie.
Democratic Socialists in America love to point to Nordic countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. They talk about universal healthcare, big welfare programs, and call it the “Nordic model” of socialism that America should copy. Bernie Sanders, AOC, and the DSA crowd push this hard.
Here’s the problem: These countries are not socialist.
Their economies run on private ownership, competitive free markets, and global trade. They are capitalist countries with high taxes and generous public services layered on top. Danish leaders have said this out loud for years. Former Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen put it plainly: “Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.”
Look at the numbers. In the Heritage Foundation’s 2026 Index of Economic Freedom, Denmark ranks 7th, Norway 8th, Sweden 11th, Finland 13th, and Iceland 16th. The United States sits at 22nd. These Nordic nations score high on property rights, business freedom, trade openness, and rule of law. They are “mostly free” economies that generate wealth through markets, then tax it heavily to fund services.
Scandinavian countries do offer more public services than the United States. Those services are paid for by broad, steep taxes that hit regular workers hard—not just the rich. Value-added taxes, high income taxes starting at middle incomes, and other levies fund the system. Citizens are not sitting around collecting benefits. Labor force participation in Norway is higher than in the United States in multiple measures. People work.
Senator Rand Paul completely dismantles the myth that Scandinavia is some socialist utopia.
Boom. John Stossel just dropped the truth bomb:

There is another major factor the socialists ignore. These countries have lower crime rates and higher levels of public trust in large part because they have been ethnically and culturally much more homogeneous for most of their modern history. Shared culture, language, and norms make high-trust welfare systems easier to run. They are also tiny compared to America. Norway’s entire population is about 5.5–5.6 million people. The New York City metropolitan area alone has roughly 19.9 million—about three-and-a-half to four times larger.
America is a massive, diverse, continental nation with deep political divisions, different cultural traditions, and a history of individualism and entrepreneurship. What works in a small, high-trust, relatively uniform society does not automatically transfer. When larger, more diverse European countries tried heavier socialist-style approaches, results were often poorer and required course corrections back toward markets.
The bottom line is clear. The countries Democrats sell as socialist utopias are not socialist countries. Everyone is being lied to. What democratic socialists actually push—more government control over healthcare, energy, housing, and the economy—has a track record that looks more like stagnation, shortages, and loss of freedom than Nordic success. In a country the size and complexity of the United States, that path risks communist-style control, extreme poverty for many, destruction of the middle class, and the stripping away of individual freedoms.
Free markets created the wealth that funds Nordic services. Private ownership and competition remain the foundation. America should keep its free-market strengths, protect individual liberty, and reject the false sales pitch that turns successful capitalism into a Trojan horse for socialism.

- Bernie’s Scandinavian Socialism Fantasy Exposed Bernie Sanders, the blowhard socialist, peddles a shameless, decades-old lie: Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are not socialist paradises. They are capitalist powerhouses with private enterprise, free markets, and economic freedom rankings that crush the U.S.—while true socialism delivers poverty and misery. Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen torched Bernie’s nonsense in 2015: “Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.” Yet Bernie keeps lying. Heritage Index: Denmark (#9), Sweden (#10), Norway (#11)—more capitalist than America (#25). Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea? Rock bottom, just like Bernie’s failed ideology. Nordics amassed wealth under capitalism before bloating welfare states. Sweden’s 1970s-90s socialist experiments caused stagnation, sky-high taxes, and a banking crisis forcing 500% interest rates and market reforms. Denmark and others slashed spending and regulations after welfare bloat led to high unemployment and debt. No national minimum wage mandates, flexible labor markets, and pro-growth policies—not Bernie’s wealth-redistribution fever dreams or government seizure of production. Bernie confuses high-tax welfare capitalism with his toxic socialism. These nations succeed despite big government, fueled by markets, trust, and work ethic—not his central-planning delusions that wrecked Venezuela. His fantastical lies romanticize systems leaders themselves reject, ignoring cultural realities that can’t be copied to justify bigger U.S. government. Wake up: Scandinavia proves capitalism works. Bernie’s “democratic socialism” is just envy-fueled fantasy for suckers. Facts obliterate the myth. – Shadow Banned
