Our eternal destiny is securely anchored in the absolute, judicial reality of imputation, where a sinless Savior took our sins upon Himself so that we could be clothed in the perfect righteousness of God.
Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles wide open, our journals ready, and a fresh, warm cup of coffee in hand.
Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that goes to the absolute, historic foundation of how we are saved and how we are called to live. Drawn directly from our study session, let me walk you through three memorable, life-changing truths we are going to unpack together:
1. The Underlined Sanctuary: Digging Out the Doctrines of Grace
Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 5:1–15.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at my personal Bible study method. I am going to show you my personal Bible and how I physically underline and asterisk key verses—such as our ultimate assurance of heaven in verse 8, the "terror of the Lord" in verse 11, the constraining love of Christ in verse 14, and the call to stop living for ourselves in verse 15. We’ll discuss how a systematic theology sifts all 31,000 verses of Scripture to help us grasp the four giant, foundational doctrines of our faith: reconciliation, substitution, justification, and imputation.
Application: We must move beyond casual reading and start actively mining the scriptures. Grab a pencil, start marking your Bible, and utilize excellent tools like the MacArthur Study Bible to let these profound doctrines anchor your daily walk.
2. Only Perfect People Enter Heaven: Unpacking the Great Exchange
Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 5:21 (with reference to 2 Cor 5:10).
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we will explore what is arguably the single most important verse in the entire Bible, comprised of just 15 Greek words. We will look at "the great exchange"—how God took all of our sins and judicially imputed them to the sinless Savior on the cross, and in turn, credited Christ’s flawless, perfect righteousness to our account. This double imputation is the only way we can stand legally perfect to enter heaven, completely erasing our sins from the equation before we stand at the Bema seat of Christ.
Application: Rest in the spectacular, comfortable assurance that you do not have to perform for your salvation. You are legally clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Let that staggering grace motivate you to live entirely for Him rather than wasting your life on temporary things.
3. The Ambassador’s Dispatch: Representing the King from Macedonia
Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 5:20.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we will trace the historic and geographic backdrop of Paul’s letter. We will locate Paul on his third missionary journey, writing from Macedonia (either Thessalonica or Philippi) back to the struggling saints in Corinth. We will study our high calling as official ambassadors for Christ. I will open up my personal typed journal to show you how to write down titles, summaries, and personal application prayers in your own words so that these truths can actively transform your life.
Application: Remember that no matter where you are—at your job, at school, or in your neighborhood—you are a diplomat on foreign soil representing the King of Kings. We must actively share this message of reconciliation with a dying world.
