Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and our notebooks ready.
Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that proves God’s Word is anchored in absolute, undeniable reality. We are going to look at what I call "sacred history"—the truth that biblical events happened to real people, in real places, with real problems, and everything happened at a specific time. If you want to understand the exact timeline of the Babylonian captivity, the Persian Empire, and the countdown to the end of the world, you absolutely must join us for this lesson.
Here are three monumental truths we will unpack together:
1. The Three Sieges: Real People in Real Places
Scripture References: Daniel 9; Ezekiel.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at the devastating 70 years of Babylonian captivity. I will walk you through the exact historical timeline of Nebuchadnezzar’s three sieges of Jerusalem. You will see how Daniel was hauled off to Babylon during the first siege in 605 BC, followed by Ezekiel in the second siege in 597 BC, leading up to the horrific third siege in 586 BC when the city was entirely leveled and the people were massacred.
2. The 70-Year Countdown: Servitude and Desolation
Scripture References: Daniel 9; Isaiah 45; Ezra 1 and 4.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we dive into the deep theological realities of this period: the 70 years of servitude where the nation of Israel suffered, and the desolation of Jerusalem, meaning there were no sacrifices or offerings taking place. We will see how God perfectly orchestrated the end of this period using Persian rulers. You will learn how leaders like Cyrus the Great—who was prophesied in Isaiah 45—and Artaxerxes issued decrees that ended the captivity and literally triggered Daniel’s famous 70-week prophetic countdown for the end of the world.
3. The Persian Kings and the Museum of History
Scripture References: Ezra 1-6; Nehemiah 2 and 12; Esther; Zechariah 12-14.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we map out exactly where your favorite Old Testament figures fit into this historical timeline. We will see how Ezra (who copied the Scriptures) and Nehemiah (who rebuilt the wall) lived during the same era that Queen Esther was married to King Xerxes over in Persia. I will show you where Persian kings like Darius and Artaxerxes Longimanus show up in the biblical text, and I’ll share how much Bonnie and I love going to museums to find the actual ancient artifacts that perfectly confirm these scriptures. As a bonus, we will even set the stage for next week’s incredible study on Zechariah 12-14, which gives us the ultimate biblical description of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ!
