Dennis Haskins, the actor generations of viewers knew as Principal Richard Belding on Saved by the Bell, has died at the age of 75.
Haskins’ agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed the news and described the actor’s death as a tragic loss. He said fans loved Mr. Belding, while those who knew Haskins personally loved him even more. Schachter remembered his longtime friend as someone who genuinely adored his fans and always made time for them.
Haskins died Sunday night at an assisted-living facility in Burbank, California, according to his longtime caretaker. A definitive cause of death has not been publicly announced. The Los Angeles Times reports that Haskins had privately battled Parkinson’s disease and experienced other health problems.
Although he appeared in numerous television shows, Haskins became inseparable from Mr. Belding. He first played the character on Good Morning, Miss Bliss before continuing through Saved by the Bell and its follow-up, Saved by the Bell: The New Class. His involvement with the franchise stretched from the late 1980s through 2000.
For many people who grew up in the 1990s, Mr. Belding was more than the authority figure trying to control Zack Morris and the Bayside gang. He was funny, patient and surprisingly compassionate—and the show regularly used its ridiculous stories to leave younger viewers with a sincere lesson.
Former co-star Lark Voorhies called knowing Haskins for nearly 40 years one of the truest blessings of her life. She remembered him as a loyal friend with a kind and gentle heart.
Jeremy described Saved by the Bell as his most fondly remembered childhood show and contrasted that affection with Vivek Ramaswamy’s previous criticism of a culture that celebrated characters such as Zack and Slater instead of academically focused characters such as Screech.
Whatever anyone thinks of the show today, Dennis Haskins helped create something that millions of people still associate with a happier and more innocent era of television. Rest in peace, Mr. Belding
