The iconic player recently signed a two-year extension with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $101.35 million, which also offers him the option to play for another year through the 2025-26 season. In a discussion with ESPN, James entertained the possibility of this contract marking the end of his illustrious career. “It definitely could be my last,” James said. “We’ll see how things unfold.”

There are multiple signs suggesting that James might be contemplating retirement after this contract. At 39 years old, James is acutely aware of the unavoidable effects of aging, particularly in sports. By the end of this contract, he will be 41, should he decide to activate the player option for an additional season.
One of the most sentimental aspects of this contract for James is the chance to play alongside his 19-year-old son, Bronny. Achieving this dream was a significant factor in his decision to continue playing. The Lakers drafted Bronny 55th overall in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, and the anticipation of seeing father and son on the court together in Lakers’ colors is high.

Another interesting element is the jersey number 23, which James has worn for many of his playing seasons out of respect for Michael Jordan. If he plays two more seasons, James would complete 23 seasons in the NBA, a number laden with personal significance for him. This was highlighted in a light-hearted exchange with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin about the number being a “pretty good number” to end on.

As James gears up for his 22nd season, his focus remains on chasing a fifth NBA title. Despite the Lakers facing challenges in strengthening their squad due to salary cap constraints caused by James’ reduced pay, his commitment to the team and the sport remains steadfast. The decision on whether his retirement will be celebrated with a tour or announced post-season remains with James.
