In a region where the death penalty is frequently used, Lebanon has taken a stand against executions. On August 11, 2026, the Lebanese parliament voted to abolish the death penalty, replacing it with life imprisonment. Until now, death by hanging and firing squad was possible, although it had not been used for more than 20 years.
