Ilhan Omar posted what looked like a peaceful video from a Minnesota lake—but the Somali song playing behind it has sparked a massive backlash. The Washington Free Beacon says a certified translation of “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya” includes hostile lyrics such as “You will suffer and cry” and “We are the ones who rule this land.”
Critics believe Omar deliberately selected the track as a threatening political message. Omar’s own caption simply encouraged people to spend less time scrolling and more time outdoors. She did not write or perform the song, identify a target or explicitly explain why she chose it. We break down the translated lyrics, the furious reaction and the crucial difference between what the song says and what the evidence establishes about Omar’s intentions.
