The raid that started this happened on October 12. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., home while she and her husband, Tim Mynett, were there. They left with her cellphone, notebooks, computers, and her passport. Minnesota prosecutors are leading the immigration-fraud probe; the U.S. Attorney’s office in D.C. is looking at the couple’s finances separately. More than a dozen grand-jury subpoenas have gone out to family members.
The core question is simple: did Omar or her late father lie about her age so she could get citizenship as a minor when her father was naturalized in 2000? She has long said she became a citizen at 17. Some records list her birth year as 1981, others as 1982. If the 1981 date is correct, she would have been 18 or older and would not have qualified for the easier path through her father. Staff later pushed libraries and Wikipedia to list 1982. Investigators are also looking at whether she or family members made false statements on later documents.

Her sister, Sahra Noor, has already spoken with federal investigators. Family text messages from a phone seized earlier helped get the search warrant. Fox News and others report that authorities have Omar’s DNA. One possible use is to test the long-standing claim that she once married a man who is actually her brother in order to help him with immigration. Omar has denied that. DNA would settle the biology question one way or the other.
President Trump answered a reporter’s question in the Oval Office by saying deportation is not the only option. “She could also go to jail,” he said. He called her a “very dishonest person who hates our country” and described Somalia as a place with no real government. Border czar Tom Homan has said that if investigators prove she lied during the naturalization process, denaturalization (taking away citizenship) and deportation are possible.
