Herodotus walked the upper halls of a building he said beat the pyramids. The priests would not let him down below.
Around 450 BC the Greek from Halicarnassus had already seen the pyramids at Giza. In Book II of the Histories he still called the labyrinth near Lake Moeris and the City of Crocodiles (Crocodilopolis in the Fayum) greater than those pyramids and greater than anything the Greeks had built.
He described twelve roofed courts, six facing north and six facing south, inside one outer wall. Three thousand chambers total—1,500 above ground and 1,500 underground. Stone roofs, walls covered in carvings, courts ringed with fitted white-stone pillars. He walked the upper level himself and called the maze of passages an unending marvel. The keepers refused the lower level. Those chambers, they said, held the tombs of the kings who first built the place and the sacred crocodiles.
A pyramid of about forty fathoms stood at one corner. Strabo, who also visited later, agreed the complex equaled or surpassed the pyramids. Manetho, Diodorus, Pliny, and others added their own accounts. At least two of the classical writers claimed firsthand looks. Continued below the vid
The site is Hawara.
Modern work places the labyrinth with the mortuary complex of Amenemhat III (Middle Kingdom, roughly 1850–1800 BC) beside his mud-brick pyramid in the Fayum, about 90 kilometers southwest of Cairo. Flinders Petrie excavated there in the late 1880s and mapped a vast foundation platform roughly 300 by 250 meters. He found enormous quantities of white limestone chips and argued the building had been systematically quarried for stone, mostly in Roman times. What remained was largely the robbed-out footprint of a large Middle Kingdom temple complex, not a standing maze of 3,000 rooms.
That has been the mainstream reading for more than a century. Herodotus either exaggerated a still-impressive ruin or was shown a later version of Amenemhat’s complex. The lower 1,500 chambers either never matched the description or were destroyed or flooded long ago. Rising groundwater from the Bahr Wahbi canal has complicated every later attempt to dig deep.
There is a building in Egypt that Herodotus saw with his own eyes and called greater than the pyramids and the most astonishing thing humanity had ever made.
Almost no one alive today has heard of it…
The Greek historian, often called the father of history, had spent weeks traveling through Egypt and had described the pyramids in detail. Then, near the entrance to the Faiyum oasis, he came across something he could not describe at all.
He wrote: “I have seen it myself, and I found it greater than words can say. For if one should put together all the buildings produced by the Hellenes, they would prove to be inferior in labour and expense to this labyrinth. Though the pyramids beggar description, this maze surpasses even the pyramids. […] The Egyptian caretakers would by no means show us the underground chambers, as they were, they said, the burial vaults of the kings who first built it. The upper we saw for ourselves, and they are creations greater than human.”
It is called the Labyrinth of Hawara. It is generally attributed to the pharaoh Amenemhat III, who built his own pyramid alongside it around 1800 BC.
According to Herodotus, the structure contained three thousand rooms — 1500 above ground and 1500 below — arranged across twelve roofed courts, surrounded by a single outer wall, with passageways so confusing that visitors needed a guide to move through it.
Two centuries after Herodotus, the Greek geographer Strabo visited the same building and described immense colonnades and chambers each roofed with a single colossal stone, slabs so vast they spanned the entire width of each room without any internal support.
Diodorus Siculus, writing in the first century BC, said the architects who built it “left no room for their successors to surpass them.”
Six ancient authors described the Labyrinth across the centuries that followed: Herodotus, Strabo, Diodorus Siculus, Pliny the Elder, Manetho, and Pomponius Mela. Every one of them treated it as one of the wonders of the world.
Then, slowly, it disappeared.
In 1888, the British Egyptologist Flinders Petrie excavated the area south of Amenemhat III’s pyramid and uncovered the foundations of an enormous rectangular structure, over 300 metres long and 244 metres wide. He concluded he was looking at what little remained after the rest of the Labyrinth had been quarried away in antiquity for use as building material elsewhere.
For more than a century, the story ended there. Until 2008…
That year, the Mataha Expedition — a collaboration between the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Cairo and Ghent University in Belgium — conducted a ground-penetrating radar survey of the site. What they detected, several metres below the sand, was a grid of vertical structures at depths of 8 to 12 metres, consistent with a network of closed chambers.
A 2024 study using electrical resistivity tomography confirmed the anomalies. The implication is staggering: there may still be something down there. Possibly much of the Labyrinth that the ancients described, lying in the dark, far below where Petrie ever dug.
The Egyptian government has not authorised further excavation. A nearby canal has been leaking water into the underground chambers for nearly two hundred years.
And so the most accurate description we have is still the one written by a Greek historian who walked through it twenty-five centuries ago.
Herodotus saw it with his own eyes and described it as the single greatest wonder of the ancient world…

Scans and the 2026 dig.
Geophysics keeps pulling the question back. A 2008 Mataha Foundation ground-penetrating radar survey reported grid-like anomalies consistent with walls and rooms. Later work, including 2015 satellite scans associated with Timothy Akers and Merlin Burrows, has been cited for larger subsurface features, including claims of substantial chambers. A December 2025 paper in the Journal of Scientific Exploration by Mark Carlotto presented space-based synthetic aperture radar returns south of the Amenemhat III pyramid that the author interprets as possible remains of a large buried structure matching the classical footprint.
In May 2026 Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed new fieldwork at Hawara under Fayoum antiquities, aimed at locating and documenting surviving remains of the so-called Palace of the Labyrinth before groundwater does more damage. By summer, site footage and updates showed megalithic walling and large worked stones emerging from the sand on the same footprint earlier scans had marked. Reports from the Archaeological Rescue Foundation and associated researchers describe the early trenches. Filippo Biondi, the telecommunications engineer behind the 2025 Khafre Research Project satellite radar claims at Giza, has indicated plans to scan Hawara once his Giza processing is further along.
Here it is folks – THE VERY FIRST VIEW of the ACTUAL Labyrinth of Egypt!!!!!!!
Mission Hawara is on! We’re witnessing the very beginning of the project that will recover our real history. Tim Akers, who carried out the most advanced subterranean scans of the structure, described details that indicate the complex was laid out like a history museum, with freestanding objects throughout the galleries, as well as a library. In other words, its a repository of advanced knowledge and technology; a hall of records.
Now, the excavation team just made contact with the structure itself! Look at the megalithic wall they uncovered!!! I was there less than two months ago, and saw them working. This dig is right in the middle of the labyrinth, and this article even states that accessing the labyrinth is the project’s official purpose!
And there’s more too…

What the latest theories actually say.
The conservative view remains that Hawara was Amenemhat III’s large but conventional mortuary temple and associated complex, thoroughly robbed, and that Herodotus’s numbers and underground level are literary or second-hand amplification. Anomalies in wet, rubble-filled ground can mimic walls. Petrie’s debris field matches a destroyed stone building of impressive size without requiring an intact two-story labyrinth still waiting under the sand.
The more open reading notes that multiple independent scanning efforts have returned geometric anomalies on the classical footprint, that 2026 excavation is now putting spades into that ground, and that the priests Herodotus spoke with specifically pointed to earlier kings in the sealed lower level. Amenemhat’s pyramid is already more than a millennium older than Herodotus’s visit. If substantial engineered chambers exist below the known Middle Kingdom levels, the site is either larger and deeper than the standard reconstruction or incorporates an earlier phase the classical writers were told about.
The extreme Giza claims (deep vertical cylinders, multi-kilometer networks under Khafre) sit in a different category. They come from the same Italian radar team, have not been independently confirmed or fully published in peer-reviewed form that has held up, and have drawn sharp pushback from figures such as Zahi Hawass. One related paper was later retracted for methodological problems. Those claims do not automatically validate or invalidate the Hawara data.
🚨Ben Van Kerkwyk just dropped a bomb! Scans of the Egyptian Labyrinth at Hawara reveal a 40m long metallic tic-tac shaped object buried 150–180ft down in the central atrium. A structure said to rival the pyramids and now this. What the hell are we looking at?

Is Origins Explained onto something?
On Hawara, the channel is pointing at a real classical account, a real site, real geophysical anomalies, and a real 2026 Egyptian dig that has already produced megalithic stone on the expected footprint. That is more than recycled YouTube mystery. Whether the lower level of 1,500 chambers still exists in anything like the form Herodotus was denied remains an open excavation question. The most cautious Egyptologists will wait for published trenches and stratigraphy. The alternative researchers argue the scans have already shown enough to justify the dig that is now happening.
The video folds Hawara into broader claims about structures under the Giza plateau. The Hawara thread is the stronger and better-documented half of that argument right now. Digging is underway. The water table is the practical enemy. Results will decide how much of the Greek’s description survives contact with the sand.
Whatfinger News keeps the open files on claims like this at the Mysteries desk: name the source, put the primary account and the scans on the table, note what is confirmed and what is still claim, then step back. The full file is here: https://dedicatedissues.com/mysteries/.
