In a chilling case that has captured widespread attention, a man accused of decapitating his father at home in suburban Philadelphia earlier this year and posting a video of the severed head online has been deemed competent to stand trial. Judge Stephen Corr ruled on Thursday after a nearly five-hour proceeding.

Courtroom Drama
Dressed in a yellow jumpsuit marked “inmate” and with his hands cuffed, Justin Mohn appeared in court, frequently smiling, nodding, or shaking his head throughout the hearing. Mohn’s request to dismiss his public defender and appoint a new attorney was granted. When asked if he was willing to work with a new lawyer, Mohn replied, “Absolutely.”
Proceedings and Testimonies
The courtroom witnessed several surreal moments, particularly when Mohn nodded and smiled at prosecution witness Dr. Kelly Chamberlain, a forensic psychologist. Chamberlain described Mohn as intelligent, calm, and socially appropriate based on her meetings with him. She noted that Mohn opposed his attorney’s mental health defense strategy, appearing appropriately “self-interested.”
Chamberlain’s testimony contradicted that of defense expert Dr. John Markey, who initially diagnosed Mohn with schizophrenia but later revised his diagnosis to delusional disorder. Markey highlighted Mohn’s letters claiming to be a messiah-like figure persecuted by the federal government and seeking asylum from Russia’s ambassador.
Mental Health Disputes
Markey detailed Mohn’s delusional beliefs, including his perception of his public defender as a federal agent working against him. He even wrote to Russia’s ambassador, apologizing to President Vladimir Putin for claiming to be the czar of Russia. “It’s all delusional,” Markey stated.

Chamberlain, however, argued that Mohn’s writings, which mentioned “Satanic” cults seeing him as the messiah, were more rhetorical than delusional. She suggested that Mohn felt marginalized and that his writings were expressions of this sentiment.
Behavior in Jail
Corrections officer Ralph Taylor testified that Mohn was “extremely polite” and respectful in jail. Judge Corr questioned Mohn about his understanding of the charges, to which Mohn accurately recounted that he faced several charges, the most serious being first-degree murder.
Gruesome Details of the Crime
According to prosecutors, Mohn fatally shot his father, Michael Mohn, with a pistol before decapitating him with a kitchen knife and machete at their Levittown home. Justin Mohn then recorded a video holding his father’s severed head, identifying him as a federal employee, and calling for violence against the government. Blood stains were found on the desk in the room where the video was recorded, along with a computer with several open tabs, including one for YouTube.
Conspiracy Theories and Online Presence
In the disturbing video, Mohn ranted about various conspiracy theories, the Biden administration, immigration, fiscal policy, urban crime, and the war in Ukraine. The video was posted on YouTube for several hours before being removed.
Legal Proceedings
Justin Mohn faces charges of first-degree murder, abusing a corpse, and possession of instruments of crime. He remains in custody without bail as the case proceeds, now with a new attorney to represent him in the upcoming trial.
