Whatfinger News is where readers come for the day’s reporting and for the books that keep circulating long after the release week ends. FingerBind is the place you say the title and see the jacket. These pieces are where readers show why a particular book stayed with them and why they keep handing it to someone else.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is one of those books. Published in 2023 as the first volume of the Empyrean series, it follows Violet Sorrengail, the physically fragile daughter of a high-ranking general who is ordered into the Rider Quadrant at Basgiath War College instead of the safer scribe path she was trained for. Cadets die during training. Dragons choose their riders. The political stakes of the kingdom sit underneath the daily requirement to stay alive. The book became a major bestseller and a BookTok phenomenon because it delivers dragons, a high body count, and a charged enemies-to-lovers relationship in the same story without asking the reader to choose between them.
Readers keep recommending it because the danger is constant and the attraction is not abstract. Violet has to solve practical problems with a body that is not built for the course, while the person who has the most reason to want her dead is also the person she cannot avoid. The dragons are not background decoration. Their choices reshape the alliances and the risks. The result is a romantasy novel that a large number of readers finished in a single sitting and then immediately wanted the next one.
The following short piece was submitted by a Whatfinger reader. It is original work inspired by the tone and situation of the novel. It does not continue the plot or use the characters. Readers who want to send their own pieces can email whatfinger@proton.me. No graphics or files, please.

The rope bridge swayed harder once the wind picked up. She kept her eyes on the far platform and counted the gaps between the planks the way the older cadets had told her to. Three of the gaps were wide enough that a boot could slip through if she misjudged the step. She had already watched two people go over earlier in the morning. One had caught a lower rope. The other had not.
Her left shoulder was still stiff from the fall on the stairs the day before. She tested the range once, then locked the arm closer to her side. The pack on her back was heavier than the rules required because she had added the extra water skin. The extra weight changed her balance. She had practiced the adjustment on the ground until the difference stopped surprising her.
Halfway across she stopped. The person ahead of her had frozen. She could see the tremble in the other cadet’s calves. The wind shoved the bridge sideways and the frozen cadet grabbed the side rope with both hands. That was the move that usually made the next step worse. She waited. When the gust eased she spoke once, low enough that only the person in front could hear.
“Left foot on the third plank. Then the right. Do not look down.”
The cadet moved. She followed at the same spacing. When they reached the platform the instructor on duty marked both of them through without comment. She stepped clear of the bridge and rolled the stiff shoulder once. The next station was the weighted climb. She already knew which handholds were loose. She also knew the instructor would not point them out.
She drank from the extra skin and put it back. The line behind her was still moving. She walked toward the climb without looking at the names on the board.
End of submission
Fourth Wing works for a large audience because the stakes stay personal even when the world is large. Survival is not guaranteed by talent or by bloodline. The romantic tension is built on the same conditions that make the training lethal, so the attraction and the danger reinforce each other instead of alternating. It is the kind of book people finish and then immediately look up the sequel, and the kind of book that brought a lot of readers into fantasy who had not picked up a dragon novel in years.
If you have not read it, the novel is widely available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle. The television adaptation is in development, but the book still carries the fuller version of the training sequences and the slower accumulation of trust and suspicion.
