Zurich police deployed water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse several hundred masked protesters who rioted in the city center. Spurred by social media calls following similar demonstrations across Europe, the crowd blocked streets with trash containers, set fires, and targeted emergency responders with fireworks, bottles, and stones. The rare display of violence in Switzerland resulted in property damage to shops and transit stops, coming ahead of a planned anti-austerity general strike called by left-wing and student groups for November 20.
