Tennessee’s attempted execution of Christa Pike became a complete disaster after she reportedly remained alive following two doses of lethal-injection drugs.
Witnesses said Pike was still breathing and loudly snoring before officials transported her to a hospital. Gov. Bill Lee has now halted the state’s remaining 2026 execution and ordered an independent review.
Pike requested female personnel because of her history of abuse by men, and reports indicated that an all-female execution team could be used. However, the team’s complete final membership has not been confirmed, and there is no evidence that anyone’s gender caused the failure.
