President Donald Trump has officially cancelled the Pentagon’s plan to livestream the firing-squad execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. The execution itself remains scheduled for December 3 at Fort Hood, where Hasan is set to face the firing squad for killing 13 people and attempting to murder 32 others during the 2009 attack. Trump said broadcasting the execution might have served as a powerful deterrent, but acknowledged that many “good and well meaning people” did not want to watch someone die through a livestream or any other visual device. Immediate family members of Hasan’s victims will still be permitted to witness the execution in person if they choose.
The original livestream plan was announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and later confirmed by the Pentagon, but it triggered criticism from Republicans, Democrats, religious leaders and retired military officials. Vice President JD Vance said he wouldn’t watch, while critics warned that footage of the execution could be repurposed as terrorist recruitment propaganda. The Pentagon says Trump and Hegseth discussed the reversal and remain aligned. If the sentence is carried out, it will be the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first military execution by firing squad since World War II. The only thing Trump has cancelled is the broadcast—the date, sentence and execution method remain unchanged.
