Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez called US Ambassador Mike Waltz a “liar” after Waltz denied the existence of an American blockade on Cuba at the UN General Assembly on July 7. The confrontation centred on the decades-long US economic, commercial and financial embargo on the country. The session also saw 136 members of the UN General Assembly vote in favour of an additional debate on Agenda Item 38, "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial, and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America Against Cuba". The US strongly objected to the proposal.
