On October 5, police in Pristina used tear gas to disperse demonstrators clashing outside Kosovo’s government and parliament buildings. Protesters threw rocks and firecrackers, demanding that lawmakers amend a law to limit the powers and cap prison sentences for the Hague-based war crimes court. The unrest follows the recent sentencing of former president Hashim Thaci and three other former KLA commanders to lengthy prison terms for war crimes committed during the 1998-99 conflict with Serbia.
