China has announced a comprehensive six-month monitoring initiative targeting individuals and goods entering the country for mpox, following the World Health Organization’s designation of the outbreak as a global public health emergency. The move comes in response to the escalating situation reported in Africa and recent international cases.
The World Health Organization (WHO) elevated the alarm on mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, on August 14, citing a severe deterioration in the outbreak across Africa. This decision underscores the global significance of the outbreak, as mpox cases have recently emerged outside of the African continent, with Sweden reporting its first case of a more dangerous variant and Pakistan confirming a case involving a traveler from the Gulf region.

In light of these developments, China’s customs administration has issued new guidelines to enhance detection and prevent the spread of mpox within its borders. These measures include screening travelers from affected regions, especially those who have been in contact with mpox cases or exhibit symptoms. Travelers are urged to proactively report to customs officials if they fall into these categories.
Additionally, China’s guidelines mandate the sanitation of vehicles, containers, and items arriving from regions with confirmed mpox cases. This step aims to minimize the risk of virus transmission through contaminated goods.
The outbreak has been particularly severe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where mpox was first identified in humans in 1970. The virus, transmitted from animals to humans and through close physical contact between individuals, has expanded its reach beyond Africa in recent months.
