In a stunning spiral of deceit and danger, a chess tournament in Dagestan has morphed into something far darker than a battle of wits. Amina Abakarova, a player once known for her prowess on the board, now stands accused of an act so bizarre, so chilling, it feels plucked from the pages of a twisted novel. Poison—a substance laced with mercury—was allegedly her weapon of choice in what seems to be an audacious attempt to incapacitate, or worse, her unsuspecting opponent.

Captured on video in a scene that defies belief, Abakarova is seen casually, almost surreptitiously, approaching her opponent’s chessboard. But this was no ordinary adjustment of pieces. The footage, grainy yet damning, appears to show her smearing something on the board, a substance later revealed to contain mercury—a toxin as insidious as it is deadly. Her movements are swift, her gaze shifty, as she exits the room, leaving behind what could only be described as a ticking time bomb in the midst of a supposed game of intellect and strategy.
The victim, Umaiganat Osmanova, was oblivious to the danger lurking beneath her pieces. As the match commenced, the symptoms began. First, a strange sensation, followed by the sight of tiny, silvery balls—mercury—rolling out from under the board. What started as a game quickly descended into a fight for breath, as Osmanova found herself suddenly short of air, her body rebelling in the face of invisible poison. Panic set in, and the game was abandoned as the reality of the situation began to dawn.

The tournament, held in Makhachkala, Dagestan’s bustling capital, was thrown into disarray. Organizers, horrified by what they saw on the surveillance footage, immediately halted the event and called in the authorities. The discovery of chemical agents at Abakarova’s residence only served to deepen the mystery—and the horror—of what had transpired. This wasn’t just a violation of the rules; it was an act of calculated malice, a breach of trust so profound that it left the chess community reeling.
Dagestan’s sports minister, Sazhid Sazhidov, couldn’t hide his shock and dismay. He spoke with a mix of disbelief and outrage, condemning the act as something that could have led to widespread tragedy. The implications were terrifying—had the plot succeeded, not only could Osmanova have been gravely harmed, but the entire room could have been exposed to a deadly toxin. What was meant to be a gathering of sharp minds and strategic thinking had been tainted by an act of pure, cold-blooded treachery.
The Russian Chess Federation has suspended Amina Abakarova, a 40-year-old chess pro from Makhachkala, Russia.

Now, with the investigation in full swing, Abakarova faces a future that looks increasingly bleak. The Russian Chess Federation, shaken by the scandal, has suspended her, but that may be the least of her worries. If found guilty, she could face not only a lifetime ban but also serious criminal charges. The world of chess, already a realm of high stakes and intense competition, has been rocked to its core by this unprecedented act of alleged sabotage.
This incident has ripped away the veneer of civility that usually surrounds the chessboard, revealing an undercurrent of desperation and ambition twisted into something almost unrecognizable. The game, once seen as the pinnacle of intellectual challenge, now bears the stain of treachery, as players and fans alike grapple with the unsettling reality that the thirst for victory can sometimes lead to the darkest of deeds. The reverberations of this scandal will undoubtedly echo through the chess community for years to come, serving as a stark reminder that even in a game of strategy, the line between genius and madness can be perilously thin.
