If you ever wonder why the prophet Jonah didn’t want to go to the Assyrian capital of Nineveh, I want you to look right here.
One of the best ways to know is to look at their gates, and I am standing right next to the evidence of their unimaginable cruelty.
Right down here at the bottom of this gate, the gate of Balawat, you can see precisely what the Assyrians did to their captives. This isn’t history written in words; this is a chronicle written in blood and displayed for all to see. You can look at the images of them skinning their captives. You can see the evidence of them amputating their hands and feet.
They were impaling them on poles and, for ultimate terror, putting their heads on the wall!
This is just a part of this Assyrian chronicle of their destruction and ferocity. Imagine a towering 21-foot-high Balawat gate, dominating the landscape, terrifying everyone who came near this city.
This horrifying spectacle, this overwhelming display of wickedness, is the context for our study.
