Despite Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s past declaration at an August event in Soldotna, Alaska, that intentionally misleading voters should be a criminal offense, her campaign now faces state-level scrutiny for allegedly doing just that. Alaska’s Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy ordered an investigation into whether members of Peltola’s campaign should face criminal charges following a New York Times report revealing they recruited a candidate with the same name as GOP incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan to siphon off votes. Calling the plot an organized attempt to deceive voters and misdirect their ballots, Dunleavy signaled that the campaign’s alleged ballot-stacking scheme directly contradicts Peltola’s previous calls for legal accountability regarding political deception.
