Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy is not mincing words. After the Left-Wing New York Times laid out how operatives tied to Mary Peltola’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ran a months-long “ballot composition project” to put a second Dan Sullivan on the ballot, Dunleavy ordered the Department of Public Safety to investigate. He told Fox News it “stinks to high heaven,” is “clearly orchestrated by the Democratic Party, national party as well,” and is meant to confuse voters.
The Times reported that in summer 2025 a Peltola staffer was told to comb voter records for every Dan Sullivan in the state. The goal was simple: recruit one to dilute support for incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan on Alaska’s top-four ranked-choice ballot. A retired teacher from Petersburg, Dan J. Sullivan (sometimes styled Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.), filed. He initially tried to appear as “Dan S. Sullivan.” The state Division of Elections rejected the candidacy as not filed in good faith and designed to mislead. The Alaska Supreme Court put him back on. The effort was broader. Operatives, including a Midwestern Democratic consultant who used a false name and worked brew pubs, also worked other potential spoilers. One, Gerald Heikes, made the general-election ballot. Former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios told the Times that Peltola was “definitely aware.” Rios later tried to retract; the paper said her account matched text messages and interviews with roughly a dozen people. The campaign and DSCC have denied involvement for months.
Dunleavy’s probe sits alongside federal action. The Justice Department has issued more than 30 subpoenas. U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman confirmed a criminal investigation and a surge of assets after the Times story. The DOJ is also in court asking to isolate ballots that rank the second Sullivan so investigators can examine voter confusion. Attorney General Todd Blanche has said the situation looks like fraud and that “there could be a crime.” President Trump has called the ranked-choice setup and the second Sullivan a Democrat scam meant to cost the real Sullivan votes.

Alaska’s top-four system already invites this kind of gamesmanship; both parties have used similar tactics before. The difference here is the paper trail, the identical name, the early attempt to copy the incumbent’s listing, and the timing—days before Election Day on November 3, in a race that could help decide Senate control. Early voting was already underway when the Times story dropped.
Dunleavy has said the evidence will decide whether criminal charges or civil action follow, and that Alaskans have a right to vote for the candidate they actually mean. Peltola has said she wants to clear the air and knew nothing about other candidates beyond herself and the incumbent. Voters in a state with long winters, long distances, and a complicated ballot now get to sort out which Dan is which while the investigations run.
