Ilhan Omar Is Finished: Obama-Era Feds Found Fraud Evidence in 2016, Case Buried Over Statute of Limitations
The New York Times confirmed Thursday what critics have claimed for a decade: federal agents under the Obama administration investigated Rep. Ilhan Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, found evidence it was fraudulent, and walked away.
Agents from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations opened the probe in the summer of 2016 while Omar ran for the Minnesota House. Six current and former officials told the Times the agents turned up evidence suggesting Elmi was her brother and that the marriage was a sham to get him a green card. Elmi received a provisional two-year green card on the marriage. When immigration officials asked for more proof the union was real, he left the country and dropped the petition. He has lived in the UK since.

Prosecutors cited a five-year statute of limitations on the felony and closed the file. The marriage ran from 2009 until the divorce in 2017. Tim Pool, who has covered the story daily on Timcast, called the statute-of-limitations exit a cover-up. The marriage was still active when the investigation began.
A 2016 letter from then-U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger stated his office was not investigating Omar. Her campaign treated the letter as clearance. Luger has since said the letter only rebutted a local news report that he personally requested an ICE probe. It did not address the substance of the allegations. Local coverage faded. Omar won her race.

Obama recently condemned the renewed Omar probe, but his own FBI and DHS “found some evidence that the marriage was fraudulent,” according to the New York Times.
Now the renewed federal investigation has led to a raid on Omar’s D.C. home, where authorities seized her passport, phone and computer.

Barack Obama now calls the renewed investigation “appalling.” He wrote that agents raided Omar’s home, seized records and her phone, and applied “the full weight of the federal government” against a law-abiding elected official for criticizing the president. The 2016 inquiry happened on his watch.
The current probe is broader. Agents searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12. Sources told the New York Post that investigators hold DNA evidence aimed at proving whether Elmi is her sibling. Court filings have listed her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. Her sister’s UK marriage certificate lists Nur Said Elmi as their father. Investigators are also examining whether her late father misrepresented her age on immigration forms when she obtained citizenship through him in 2000, and whether she was too old to qualify as a derivative citizen.

Trump has called for her resignation and said she could face jail. Omar told Chris Hayes she was related to Elmi “not to my knowledge.” She has denied the allegations as a conspiracy theory previously debunked in 2016. No charges have been filed.
The 2016 letter and the statute-of-limitations drop kept the story quiet for a decade. The Times reporting, the DNA claims, the home search, and the Elmi name in federal filings have put it back in the open.
