Russell Brand walked into Southwark Crown Court this week and told the jury he never had non-consensual sex. His wife followed the next day and described the man she married as caring, kind, and a wonderful father. The charges against him date to 1999–2009. The media and police campaign that revived them started after he stopped being useful to the establishment.
Brand faces three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of attempted indecent assault involving six women. He has pleaded not guilty to every count. Prosecutors call him a ruthless predator who used fame to get what he wanted. Brand admits the old version of himself was “beyond reckless” about sex and that he “misused” his fame “very, very selfishly.” He told the court consent is “fundamental, essential, necessary” and “in many ways more important than sex itself.” He also said the 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches / Times investigation left him unable to find a single person willing to give evidence on his behalf. His lawyer asked if they would “touch you with a barge pole.” Brand said no.

Laura Brand (née Gallacher) gave character evidence on October 29. She met him in 2006 when she was 19 and he was 31. She told the court their early sex was “very caringly, totally at my pace.” She knew he was promiscuous and left him in 2007 because she “wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people.” They reconnected years later, married in 2017, and have three children. On the stand she called him “caring,” “kind,” “an amazingly attentive husband,” and “a wonderful father.” She said she feels “very seen by him” and that their relationship is “very honest, frank and clear.” The prosecution noted she was not around for most of the period covered by the charges. Defense counsel tried to ask her view of the allegations’ truth; the judge shut it down.

Brand himself took the stand the day before. He denied every specific accusation. He said the years of allegations have consumed his life “at the expense of my marriage, my children and health.” He acknowledged that alcohol “makes people less effective as human beings.” He rejected the idea that he constructed his account after seeing the complainants’ statements. The judge earlier directed a not-guilty verdict on the original indecent assault count for insufficient evidence and allowed the prosecution to proceed on an attempted version of the same incident.
This is the same pattern seen in other high-profile cases against people who left the approved script: old or unproven claims surface or are amplified once the target becomes politically inconvenient. The women in the 2023 media reports and the current trial did not go to police at the time of the alleged events. The investigation gained traction after Brand’s public turn. He has said he has no one left from the old circle willing to speak for him. Isolation is the point.
The trial continues. Brand remains not guilty until a jury says otherwise. The question that keeps getting skipped is why the institutional machinery that once promoted the old Brand waited until he criticized the machine to treat two-decade-old allegations as urgent.
