Watch Dana Bash and her CNN panel hammer the talking point about the Alaska scheme being “legal”.
Dana Bash and her CNN panel spent Wednesday treating a documented Democratic scheme to plant a second Dan Sullivan on the Alaska Senate ballot as just another day in politics. After the New York Times reported that Mary Peltola’s aides and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee operatives hunted for people named Dan Sullivan to siphon votes from incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, Bash and company kept returning to the same line: it’s not illegal.
The Times account, drawn from text messages and interviews, described a Peltola staffer receiving instructions to “find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can.” They landed on a retired Petersburg teacher, Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., who filed and stayed on the ballot. From Washington to Anchorage, advisers stayed in the loop on the effort. Peltola’s campaign and the DSCC denied involvement. Alaska’s Division of Elections had already flagged the filing as not made in good faith and aimed at confusing voters; the Alaska Supreme Court later ordered him kept on the ballot anyway.
On the ballot the names appear close enough to matter under ranked-choice rules: “Sullivan, Daniel J. Jr.” with no party label, and “Sullivan, Dan S. (Registered Republican) Incumbent.” Roughly 58,000 Alaskans had already voted early by the time the Times story dropped, about one in ten registered voters.
Dana Bash says Democrats planting another Dan Sullivan on the Alaska ballot to trick voters isn’t illegal and not a big deal. LOL.
Anyone still watching CNN, no wonder y’all are stupid as shit. https://t.co/EVakI61Voy

Bash opened the Inside Politics segment by summarizing the Times reporting, then told senior political analyst Mark Preston that even with “some pretty detailed information,” “this is not illegal. It is not new.” Preston repeated the point. White House reporter Alayna Treene added that it was “not illegal” and something Republicans would “blow up.” Bash framed the whole thing as mutual “dirty tricks,” noting a prison candidate once kept on a ballot in Peltola’s old House race and a socialist in an Ohio contest. She closed by leaning on the state Supreme Court ruling and saying “the law is the law.”
That framing followed Bash’s Sunday State of the Union exchange with Attorney General Todd Blanche. The Justice Department had sued to block certification of the Alaska Senate results if votes for the second Sullivan would have changed the outcome under ranked-choice allocation. Blanche said Alaskans could end up with their vote not heard because of the name confusion. Bash pressed “what’s the crime,” put up only the first clause of Article I, Section 4 on screen, and stressed the state court decision. Blanche asked her to show the next clause, which lets Congress alter state election rules by law.
The New York Times reports that Democrat operatives tried to recruit another Dan Sullivan to run against Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, allegedly to confuse voters. The reported texts, emails and $87,000 payment raise serious questions. This could be a huge scandal. https://t.co/FFcws2zsPO

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered an investigation after the Times report. President Trump has called for Peltola to face criminal charges and drop out. The seat is one of the few that could decide Senate control in a cycle where Republicans are defending Trump-won territory.
CNN’s panel treated a coordinated search for a same-name spoiler, backed by campaign texts, as routine both-sides fare once the story broke. The same network that spent years treating ordinary election challenges as threats to democracy now describes an effort to confuse voters about who is on the ballot as settled and legal because a state court left the name in place.
