A 15-year-old girl in rural Guatemala sat upright in her coffin during her own wake last week after her father checked for a pulse on the roadside, found none, and brought her home for burial. No doctor ever saw her. No death certificate was issued. Video of the moment spread fast, and relatives say the girl is now recovering.
Yuleidy Ixcotoyac collapsed with severe chest pain while her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, an evangelical pastor, drove her toward a medical center in the village of El Jocote on October 10. He pulled over, checked for breathing and a pulse, and concluded she was gone. The family obtained a coffin and held a wake at home. Roughly eight hours later, her mother, Lesbia de Ríos, leaned over the casket and felt movement. “I kept saying she was alive; she wasn’t dead,” Ríos told local media. “When I was crying on top of her casket, we opened the window and she was moving, she was waking up and suddenly she sat up.”

Guatemala’s Public Ministry opened an investigation into the wake held without medical confirmation. The girl has been evaluated at a private hospital; no diagnosis has been released.
Cases like this surface regularly, usually when someone is pronounced dead without full medical checks, then shows signs of life hours later at a wake, funeral home, or cremation site.
In June 2023, 76-year-old Bella Montoya of Babahoyo, Ecuador, was declared dead at a hospital after a suspected stroke and cardiorespiratory arrest. Relatives received a death certificate and held a wake. About five hours in, they heard knocking. Montoya was hitting the inside of the coffin with her left hand and gasping for air. Firefighters took her back to the same hospital. She died a week later in intensive care from an ischemic stroke. Her son said this time she really was gone.
It’s absolutely true that some people declared brain dead can still hear what’s going on around them, but are unable to speak or sign that they are alive.
Zack Dunlap was declared brain dead, but survived, and later told Dr. Paul Byrne that he was listening as doctors told his parents that he was “dead” and could now become an organ donor:
“The next thing I remember was laying in the hospital bed, not being able to move, breathe — couldn’t do anything, on a ventilator. I heard someone say, ‘I’m sorry, he’s brain dead, he’s passing away.’ And there’s nothing I could do, just get mad. I couldn’t do anything, to sign, at all… I tried to scream, tried to move, just got extremely angry.”
Thankfully, Zack managed to move forcefully enough that his organ harvesting was called off. He recovered, got married, has a daughter, and works a job.
Dead people don’t get better. Brain death is not death.

American nursing homes and hospice facilities have produced several recent versions of the same error. In June 2024, Constance Glantz, 74, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was pronounced dead at a nursing home while in hospice care. Staff transported her to a funeral home. An employee preparing the body noticed she was still breathing roughly two hours later and called 911. Glantz died at a hospital later that day.
In January 2023, a 66-year-old woman with early-onset dementia at an Iowa Alzheimer’s care center was declared dead, zipped into a body bag, and taken to a funeral home. Staff there unzipped the bag and found her gasping for air. She was returned to hospice and died two days later with family present. The facility was fined $10,000.
That same month, an 82-year-old woman on Long Island was pronounced dead at a nursing home around 11:15 a.m. She was found breathing at a funeral home roughly three hours later and taken to a hospital. Police and health officials investigated.
POV: You’re declared brain-dead… and wake up as doctors prepare to harvest your organs.
In October 2021, 36-year-old Anthony “TJ” Hoover II was rushed to Baptist Health in Richmond, Kentucky after a drug overdose. Days later, doctors told his family he had no brain activity and began the organ donation process.
During the “honor walk” to the operating room, TJ’s sister noticed his eyes following her. Staff said it was just a reflex.
But inside the OR, the nightmare became undeniable.
As surgeons prepared him for organ retrieval, TJ began moving, thrashing, and crying. Despite these clear signs of life, a transplant coordinator allegedly told staff to “find a way” to proceed. Several nurses and doctors refused and walked out.
The surgery was aborted. TJ was sent back to his room; expected to die.
He didn’t.
As of 2026, TJ is alive, living with his sister, still recovering with speech and mobility challenges. The case has sparked major state and federal investigations into Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates and Baptist Health—one of the most disturbing near-misses in modern medical history.

In November 2025, a 65-year-old Thai woman who had been bedridden was placed in a coffin by her brother after she became unresponsive. He drove her hundreds of miles toward Bangkok for organ donation and then free cremation at a Buddhist temple. Temple staff heard faint knocking. They opened the coffin and found her moving her arms and head, eyes slightly open. Doctors later said severe hypoglycemia—not cardiac or respiratory failure—had put her in a death-like state. She was rushed to a hospital.
Older accounts follow the same pattern. In 1915 in South Carolina, Essie Dunbar was pronounced dead after an epileptic seizure and buried. Her sister arrived late to the funeral and insisted the coffin be dug up so she could say goodbye. When the lid came off, Dunbar sat up and smiled. She lived for decades afterward. The story has been retold for more than a century; contemporary verification is thin, but the outline matches dozens of better-documented cases.
Medical literature treats most of these as rare but real failures of death determination—catalepsy, severe hypoglycemia, residual circulation after cardiac arrest, or simple haste. In rural areas or with hospice patients whose death is expected, the checks can be thin. Victorian Europe was so worried about premature burial that inventors sold “security coffins” with bells, flags, and breathing tubes. The fear never fully disappeared.
The Guatemala video is only the latest version of a story that keeps repeating: someone checks for a pulse, finds nothing, and proceeds with burial preparations. Hours later, the person moves.

From the folks: Valerie Anne Smith: ALARMING WARNING from Neonatologist Dr. Paul A. Byrne: “Organs are harvested from the living… there is no such thing as brain dead.” “Brain death is a lie. Everybody who’s called brain dead has a beating heart, circulation and respiration.” “All the vital signs of the ‘donors’ are still present prior to the harvesting of organs, such as: normal body temperature and blood pressure; the heart is beating; vital organs, like the liver and kidneys, are functioning; and the donor is breathing with the help of a ventilator.”
“The observation of a cessation of functioning of the brain or some other organ of the body does not in itself indicate destruction of even that organ, much less death of the person.” Key facts from Dr. Byrne: • Brain death was defined by a 13 person Harvard committee WITHOUT animal studies, human trials, or basic scientific evidence. • During organ removal, patients are given paralytic drugs so they cannot move or react. • Despite paralysis, heart rate and blood pressure often rise during organ removal — a clear pain response. • Organs used for transplant must be healthy, which means they come from living bodies, not corpses. • “Brain death” is presented as medical fact, but functions mainly to allow organ harvesting. • Once organs are removed, recovery is no longer possible, even though the body was still alive before removal. They are harvesting organs from LIVING people with beating hearts! DO NOT sign organ donor cards. Tell your family: NO brain death protocol. Brain death is NOT true death. Protect life!
