The Justice Department is investigating five major television networks for possible antitrust violations after they jointly halted White House pool coverage of President Trump last month. On Oct. 10 a DOJ spokesperson confirmed the probe targets CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox News over their brief suspension of the shared television pool that films presidential events and distributes the feed to other outlets.
The networks stopped providing that feed around Sept. 21 in protest of Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House grounds. Video of major moments, including Trump’s greeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping, did not run on the usual network pool system. The five networks resumed coverage a few days later after a federal judge ordered the administration to restore credentials for the banned outlets.
The Justice Department wants to know whether the TV networks crossed a legal line when they all stopped covering the President at the same time.
Per AP and the WSJ, the Antitrust Division is examining ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News over the White House TV pool going dark last month, and officials have asked for their internal communications.
DOJ spokeswoman Emily Covington said group boycotts among commercial competitors can run afoul of the Sherman Act. No charges have been filed. It is an investigation for now.
These outlets spend all day telling us nobody is above the law.
If they made that call independently, they can show their work. If they coordinated it, they should answer for it like any other business would.

Trump announced the access restrictions on Sept. 18, accusing the three organizations of constantly reporting “fake news” and failing to maintain “basic minimum standards of professionalism and decorum,” including the publication of sensitive or classified information. The administration has described covering the president as a privilege, not a right, and said outlets continued “performative and dishonest” behavior even after access was restored under court order. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 24 requiring restoration of hard passes; that order was later extended.
BREAKING: DOJ is officially investigating ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News for possibly violating federal ANTITRUST LAWS after they teamed up to BOYCOTT their pooled TV coverage of President Trump a couple weeks ago
DOJ SPOKESWOMAN TO NYT: “Members of the television press pool have proudly boycotted covering White House events. Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act.”
“The Antitrust Division is simply investigating to determine whether these news organizations have violated the antitrust laws.”
This comes after the White House blocked CNN from its pool assignment in late-September
Instead of sending a replacement, all five networks agreed together to stop covering Trump’s movements. IN UNISON.— Jack Wilson (@newsleecher01) October 11, 2026
DOJ spokeswoman Emily Covington stated that members of the television press pool “have boycotted covering White House events. Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act.” The Antitrust Division is examining whether the coordinated pause crossed that line. Officials contacted the networks and issued civil investigative demands seeking communications and materials related to the pool’s operations. The networks did not comment when contacted by multiple outlets.
DRIVE-BY MEDIA: The top five networks colluded to shut down White House coverage on television, in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, and the DOJ is investigating.

Press groups pushed back. Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press President Bruce D. Brown called the inquiry another “brazen attempt to try to intimidate journalists” and said coverage decisions are protected by the First Amendment. Other advocates labeled the antitrust theory nonsense and tied it to broader tensions between the administration and outlets whose reporting Trump has repeatedly criticized. CNN noted that Trump ally Laura Loomer had publicly suggested an antitrust challenge to the networks weeks earlier.
The White House television pool has operated for decades as a rotating shared crew for space-limited events. The DOJ’s position treats the simultaneous decision to withhold that shared feed as potential commercial coordination among competitors rather than independent editorial choices. Whether the short-lived stand-down meets the legal standard for a prohibited group boycott is the question the investigation is now asking.
