Origins Explained put up “They Found Something Beneath the Pyramids That Shouldn’t Be There” on October 5. Nearly 40,000 views in a day. The narration walks the Halls of Amenti, a lost-civilization pitch, and a radar picture Zahi Hawass already called fake news. Joe Rogan has been running the older half of this argument for years. It opens on the tomb reading. The Song of the Harper, around 2100 BC, uses a word that covers both tomb and pyramid. The Pyramid Texts have the dead king climbing a slope of light. Then it undercuts the hand-me-down theory. Abydos graves radiocarbon-dated to about 5316 BC. Pit burials, then mastabas, then stone. Gradual. No vanished high culture handing the plateau over in that section.
At the 12-minute mark it switches. Corrado Malanga and Filippo Biondi, satellite radar from hundreds of miles up, five chamber-like structures at Khafre, passageways, eight vertical shafts. The narration puts them over 6,500 feet across and 2,000 feet down, and ties the picture to the Halls of Amenti, the Thoth legend with no dig record. Hawass is on the tape calling it fake news. Unverified method. No peer review. No permit.
The lost-tech chapter is the standard stack. True north within about a fifteenth of a degree. Roughly two million blocks, some near 80 tons. Quarry marks that look like saws and drills. Graham Hancock’s Sphinx-as-lion in the Age of Leo, about 10,500 BC. Robert Bauval’s Orion belt match, same century, blamed on the wobble of the axis. The close is a hidden space the clip dates to 2024, about 100 feet, above the Queen’s Chamber, confirmed by the antiquities ministry. That last one is a mix-up. The filmed passage is the ScanPyramids North Face Corridor, about 9 meters, published in Nature Communications in March 2023. The Big Void, at least 30 meters long above the Grand Gallery, was announced in 2017 and still has not been entered.

The city under Khafre
The scan the video is selling comes from a March 2025 press conference in Bologna, hosted by Nicole Ciccolo. Malanga is a retired chemist from Pisa. Biondi is an electrical engineer. Armando Mei is an independent researcher. They said a method they call synthetic aperture radar Doppler tomography showed five structures near Khafre’s base, eight cylindrical shafts about 648 meters down, spiral paths, and cube-shaped chambers on the order of 80 to 90 meters. Some tellings pushed the depth to two kilometers. They skipped a journal and went straight to a microphone.
Hawass, March 23, 2025: no scientific basis, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities had not authorized work inside or around Khafre. Sarah Parcak, who uses satellite imagery on Egyptian sites, said SAR cannot see through rock. Lawrence Conyers, a ground-penetrating radar specialist at the University of Denver, called a vast underground city a huge exaggeration. Snopes rated the viral version false, and a popular cross-section making the rounds scored as AI-generated.
The method had a paper. Remote Sensing published Biondi and Malanga in October 2022 on hidden structure inside Khufu. On August 10, 2026 the journal retracted it. Serious methodological flaws and statistical errors. Findings not reliable. The authors disagreed. The notice did not accuse them of faking data. It pulled the floor out from under the 2025 show.

The date fight
The textbook clock is Fourth Dynasty. Khufu, about 2560 BC. Pierre Tallet’s team found Merer’s logbook at Wadi al-Jarf in 2013, year 27 of Khufu, crews hauling Tura limestone to Akhet Khufu. Relieving-chamber graffiti names the king. Mark Lehner’s workers’ town south of the plateau has bakeries, barracks, and animal bone. Radiocarbon from mortar charcoal in 1984 and 1995 ran a little old. The working explanation is old wood in the mix.
The rain argument is older than the radar clip and harder to wave off. In 1991 Robert Schoch told the Geological Society of America the Sphinx enclosure is weathered like limestone that sat in heavy rain, not windblown sand. His original window was about 5000 to 7000 BC, not the 10,500 BC figure that got stapled to his name. He has since said he underestimated it, and later writing puts an early phase near 10,000 BC. Mainstream Egyptology still dates the Sphinx to Khafre, about 2500 BC, and reads the grooves as quarry work plus salt and wind.
Bauval’s Orion Correlation Theory lines the three Giza pyramids on Orion’s belt and gets a cleaner match around 10,500 BC, because precession moves the equinox. Hancock has carried that, plus the lion-and-Leo reading, onto Rogan’s show more than once. JRE 2136, April 16, 2024, put him across from archaeologist Flint Dibble. JRE 2215, October 17, 2024, has Hancock putting the Sphinx rainfall back to the Younger Dryas, 12,000-plus years. Schoch’s own early paper does not require that. The African Humid Period kept the eastern Sahara wet well after the Younger Dryas, into the 5000s BC. Astronomers Ed Krupp and Tony Fairall have also said the spring-equinox sun around 10,500 BC sat in Virgo, not Leo.
Hawass sat with Rogan on May 14, 2025. Rogan later called him a closed-minded gatekeeper and said the episode might have been the worst podcast he had done. Hawass told the New York Post it was the worst interview of his life, and that Rogan would not listen. Both men agreed on the review. They did not agree on the stones.

In January 2026 Italian engineer Alberto Donini posted a preliminary Relative Erosion Method paper on the Great Pyramid’s base. Casing stone came off after the 1303 quake and through the Mamluk period, so some faces have been bare for about 675 years and others for the life of the monument. He measured twelve points. One implied more than 5,700 years of exposure. Several ran 20,000 to past 40,000. The average landed near 24,900 years before present, about 22,900 BC. His band puts 68 percent of the probability between roughly 9,000 BC and 36,000 BC, centered in the early 20,000s. He reads Khufu as a renovator. The paper is not peer reviewed. Linear erosion ignores sand burial, tourist wear, and salt. It is a measurement you can argue with. The shafts under Khafre are a picture.
The diary and the graffiti are real. The rain scars are the live fight. The city is a third thing.
Six marks, in order. The retraction landed five months after the press conference.
What is actually down there
The plateau is not empty. Khufu’s subterranean chamber is cut into bedrock and unfinished. The Osiris Shaft, under the Khafre causeway, drops to a flooded room and a granite box. A 2024 paper in Communications Earth & Environment mapped a vanished Nile branch, the Ahramat, running along the pyramid chain. That is a harbor. ScanPyramids has a real void: at least 30 meters above the Grand Gallery, still unentered, and a 9-meter corridor behind the north face that an endoscope filmed in 2023.
