Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Flydubai pilot Smit Machchhar on October 3 for his courage after a harrowing mid-air incident in which his co-pilot allegedly stabbed and repeatedly struck him in the cockpit. The flight carrying 174 passengers plunged nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds before the bloodied pilot managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers, crew, and a backup flight crew to overpower the co-pilot and safely land the jet in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Praising his heroics, Netanyahu invited the captain to light a celebratory flame on Israeli Independence Day—an honor typically reserved for Israeli citizens.
